^^ Looks like the anniversary pads will bring a lot of 650 lover into K-70X family, and they even will have a different sound with the 702 pads (easy mod).

Yep =) I was part of that camp. Wanted something to complement my HD 650s, the Annies were the right fit. More air, more seperation... but the HD 650s lush mids are still better... so it mostly depends on my mood and the genre of music I'm listening to at that moment... but, my balanced setup does make me prefer the sound of the 650s more for now (until I balance the Annies later

Just talked with Frank over at AKG and K702 65th Anniversary Edition Pads (part #5021871) are currently out of stock for at least the next three weeks. You can still order them, but you'd have to wait. He quoted me $29.00, which I believe is the cheapest they've been so far. Trying to get a response on the standard K702/Q701 Pads (part #2458M12020) right now.

Standard pads are in stock and are $14.72 each.

So, this whole "limited edition" thing has been bothering me since we brought the conversation up some time ago. I decided to call AKG directly just to see what the actual manufacturer would tell me. Got bounced around quite a bit until I finally landed on the sales manager for professional headphone products. The following is what I was told (not verbatim) by him...

The K702-65 is limited edition not in terms of the numbers it's being being produced in, but in the time that it's being produced. It is still currently being manufactured, orders are still coming in as late as August 2013, and production should wrap up entirely sometime later this year.

He also jotted my email down and said he would get written verification out to me at some point tomorrow that this was the case. So... there you have it.

Well that sounds like the perfect setup. Different headphones for different moods / music. No need to make any compromises

I posted this on the K712 pro thread but it may be beneficial to put it here too.

Not sure if it's true, but mine are #3621

I reached out to my contact in Vienna and got clarification.  He is the product manager for the K702-65.

"Concerning the serial numbers:

Usually we do not start at zero. Depending on the product, numbers below 100, 500 or 1,000 are reserved for internal use. They are reserved for our internal pre-production test series and trial series in order to test the products, assemblies, parts, color, material finish, vibration tests, acoustic measurements, and so on. Moreover, sometimes we skip a range of numbers for customized versions. Therefore, it’s hard to tell which number will be on the last headphone leaving our factory.  It might also happen that our QC department banishes some numbers in case they did not meet our strict requirements".

I hope this information will ease the minds of K702-65 owners and clear up any confusion around the serial numbers.

Quick update. I was emailed back after the rep verified information from the product manager of the K702 65th AE and this looks like the previous was only partially the case. The response I got is as follows:

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in getting your question answered. Here is the answer.
The Anniversary Edition was a limited production of total 6.000 pieces during the AKG 65 years anniversary period.

Thank you!

I left the person's name out because it was a semi-private email. I responded with...

Thanks xxxx! And the 6000 is still being produced? They'll basically stop around 6000 units?

To which they replied...

They will be stopping at 6000 units.  These started shipping in October 1012 so I would imagine production will be done soon.

Thank you!

So it looks like the AGK K702 65th Anniversary Edition is limited in that it's only being produced during "the AKG 65 years anniversary period" and production will stop at 6000 units.

Heaven has re-arrived. Standard pads are here all fresh and new and ready to be thrown on the K702-65 where they belong.

Nice! I really enjoy the stock K701 sound quite a bit. It's an very open sounding headphone.

I'm now thinking about getting a pair of K701, but maybe I'll just snag some pads instead. Maybe in grey and then dye them blue to match!
