AKG K702 65th Anniversary Edition

New Anniversary owner here, #000154. First impressions: Very comfortable and excellent sound right out of the box. Rather warm mids to my ears, but nothing to complain about. I still prefer my LCD-2, but this one is going to be great for those moments when the LCD-2 feels to heavy on my head or when I want a less intimate sound.

I'm being sent a Q701 with two cables, so I'll finally have personal A/B comparisons between sonic difference as well as pad swapping to see what they do to the other headphone.

Thanks, got it. I see that your K701 have not angled pads, right? If so, this can be the reason why they sound differ from one with angled. I read some about earlier and later production version differences, but I think the pads are the reason.

The K701 (old) that I owned had angled pads. If that makes any diff.

IMO the sonic difference is clear right out the gate.  Q701 = extended treble but not harsh clear crisp balanced with more air.  65th.  Treble rolled off a tab bit but not in a bad way. More bass presence and the mids are more lush.  Still very balanced with less air

Of course YMMV.

That's exactly the kind of differences I remember them having, so glad to get that confirmation. :)

Yes, I believe it does, cos, how do you explain the changes that I heard, after I switched the pads. Stock cable sounds darker as well, by the way.
I believe, if you change the material,  it will have influence.
Even more, I believe that AKG uses differ plastic to make Q701 models, but also differ pads material, than been used on other models and if so, this also have influence, cos, each mix of it may have differ resonance and absorbing capabilities. Basically, you can "tune" the material and you get the differ sound, without tuning the drivers.

Oh, I'm sure it makes a diff. I meant as far as my comparisons between that K701 and my Q701 which were NOTICEABLY different.

I'm pretty sure all K701's have had angled pads from day one.

That said, Mine are angled as well.
