Got the #972 and have put almost 200 hours on them now. I also have the D5000 and K701 to compare with, all running from Xonar ST -> M-Stage with 627 class A mod, so here we go
.
The K702 Anniversaries are warm, easily my warmest headphones to date. I have listened to the HD650 a couple of times, and the Annies are close. In fact, at times I'm a little worried it might be a little too warm for my liking, but it definitely makes some poorly recorded music easier to listen to. Obviously, the bass is stronger, punchier, than the K701, but the treble is also definitely different, a lot friendlier. Of course, I have a warm system, chosen for the K701, so maybe what I'm hearing is a warm source with a warm amp.
The D5000 feels like a step up in some ways (amazing reproduction of drums, very sweet and detailed midrange), but at the same time I find myself using the Annies for longer periods of time. Perhaps because they are new, but I also think that they are my most comfortable headphones, even more comfortable than the D5000, and also completely unfatiguing. Basically these are the headphones that are easiest to place on my head and forget as I listen to music.
The Annies have made me realize that the D5000 can be quite sibilant, which I rarely thought about before I got these, and also that the bass can be a bit too much. I think now I prefer the overall sound signature of the Annies, but could use a little bit higher resolution (always looking for the step closer to my favorite music). Possibly I should try a different amp - thinking about the Lyr with tubes that might bring up the upper midrange/lower treble a little bit (yes - these are not the K701!).
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase, and do listen to these more than the D5000 now, but I'm still looking for ways to get the very best from these comfortable, musical, and overall very likeable headphones.
