I just checked something and in that PDF file the part number for the K702 driver is "2400Z00070".
In the new updated PDF manual (that lists both the 65th and K702) it's: 2400Z00080
Same as the 65th and Q701.

Your PDF is from 2009 and this one is from 2012.

So they already changed the drivers of the original 702s with the newer drivers. Okay one thing is clear now, all the models use the same driver since 2012.

K701 still uses a different part number, not sure why that would be..

I know that and checked the part #s a week ago, but what I said was that the K701 pads may be slightly different. Maybe reducing the bass.
My K701 pads are really old though and I can't even tell which side is the angled side!

BTW did everyone know the 65th has the same part # for the driver as the Q701? Another mystery for you to solve...

K702 shares the same driver part #, foam and pads as the Q701. K701 uses totally different part #s for each one.

You can use this for reference:

K702 driver:
2400Z00080

K702 pads:
2458M12020

K702 foam ring:
2458Z58010

K701 driver:
2400Z0007

K701 pads:
2458M1201

K701 foam ring:
2458Z5801

All 3 parts below are the same as found on the K702.
K702 65th anniversary also uses the same foam and driver part number.
Pads much different obviously.

Q701 driver:
2400Z00080

Q701 pads:

2458M12020

Foam ring:
2458Z58010

Yes, I would be curious to hear the K702 65th with the other pads as well.

TDockweiler,

If you're interested in a chance to listen to the K702 65th in late March or April, send me a PM that its ok to PM you.

I've sent an email to Harman wondering whether the "retuning" they're talking about is an internal modification to the driver itself or something external like the earpads.

I'll send you $100,000,000 if they actually tell you what causes the differences in sound. We've been all figuring out forever why the Q701 sounds so different than the K702 (or K701).

My last K702 was purchased in 2011, so maybe some new 702s are similar in sound to the Q701. I A/B compared the two for hours and ended up keeping the Q701.

Maybe someone could try to locate a K702 made very recently.

I will report back when I get my 65th pads for the Q701. Such a long wait.. not in stock until the 19th.

Not sure a response from Harman carries much weight, to be honest. What could be done to start with is take out the drivers from the 65, put in drivers from the Q 701, measure the response, then compare to the 65's and 701's original responses to see what changed.

lol, maybe the 701s have a huge stock of drivers.

Or AKG simply forgotten to update their service manual for k701.

Got the #972 and have put almost 200 hours on them now. I also have the D5000 and K701 to compare with, all running from Xonar ST -> M-Stage with 627 class A mod, so here we go

.

The K702 Anniversaries are warm, easily my warmest headphones to date. I have listened to the HD650 a couple of times, and the Annies are close. In fact, at times I'm a little worried it might be a little too warm for my liking, but it definitely makes some poorly recorded music easier to listen to. Obviously, the bass is stronger, punchier, than the K701, but the treble is also definitely different, a lot friendlier. Of course, I have a warm system, chosen for the K701, so maybe what I'm hearing is a warm source with a warm amp.

The D5000 feels like a step up in some ways (amazing reproduction of drums, very sweet and detailed midrange), but at the same time I find myself using the Annies for longer periods of time. Perhaps because they are new, but I also think that they are my most comfortable headphones, even more comfortable than the D5000, and also completely unfatiguing. Basically these are the headphones that are easiest to place on my head and forget as I listen to music.

The Annies have made me realize that the D5000 can be quite sibilant, which I rarely thought about before I got these, and also that the bass can be a bit too much. I think now I prefer the overall sound signature of the Annies, but could use a little bit higher resolution (always looking for the step closer to my favorite music). Possibly I should try a different amp - thinking about the Lyr  with tubes that might bring up the upper midrange/lower treble a little bit (yes - these are not the K701!).

Overall I'm very happy with my purchase, and do listen to these more than the D5000 now, but I'm still  looking for ways to get the very best from these comfortable, musical, and overall very likeable headphones.

Thank you for sharing.

Well, this is what I was always trying to point , are the Anniversary users driving them with fairly neutral systems? As you wrote, your are probably not, so, still questionable, also for you, how it will perform in differ one.

Regarding amp. I believe that an good SS, or hybrid, amp will be better match for them, but all depends on your budget to begin with, so, I leave it here.
