MLE you asked if I liked them. I do quite a bit just have to get used to the signature

I am honestly just not used to having mids that strong. Having vocals front and center is little disorientating in a good way. The soundstage also feels very different as well. To me the treble feels rolled off but of course it would being used tothe bright DT990s.

So yes I like them. Just haven't reached love yet due to them being SO different from my DTs, Superlux's and CAL's(Which excite me every time I put them on.).

But....you used to have the Q701s.  Seems like you would already be a little used to the signature/soundstage....

It's tough. I sell headphones and our AKG dealer says he can special order one for me. But they aren't necessarily bringing in the 65th anniversary line of products.

Yeah, I started to guess that most canadian stores wouldn't be stocking these after searching for it on many of the major music stores.

I already went ahead and bought one off of amazon.com for close to $500, but out of curiosity, how much does the dealer charge you for the special order?

I had the Q701 for a week and sent them back to amazon. I really disliked them vs the DTs and Hd598 but I also didn't have an amp at the time. It was my fault stepped to far in the pool with out a life jacket. On my comp I had to max the Q's and I still couldn't get enough volume same with mix amp. I am sure with my E9 now I am certain it would be a different experience altogether.

65th ANNIE PADS SOON IN STOCK, VERY REASONABLY PRICED!!

Considering that the driver units are the exact same part number on both 702 versions, I'm hoping the pads make a nice improvement to my broken-in 702s!

I have Frank's permission to let you know that you can order pads thru AKG Pro's service dept; he'll be stocking up.
Shipping is Free. Here are his instructions, and his contact info at bottom:

Great!

I still don't think I've seen a consensus as to whether it's just the pads making the changes or not though.

I think I've seen some posts saying putting the anniversary pads on the Q701 made it sound like the anniversary, but also some saying that the anniversary still sounds different regardless of the plads (placebo?).

I'd love for it to be figured out already.

Yeah, I took one for the team already when I did the same thing for the Q701 vs K702.

But I can't do it this time.  Not anytime soon anyways.

Despite having the same drivers, there must have some other differences other than the headband.
Flat pads like those of the K601 make the Q701 too shouty. At first it's nice, but then it becomes annoying after the first day.
Mids just way too forward with K601 pads. I had this same experience with the K702 and K601 pads.

Maybe with the flat 65th pads the sound kind of gets balanced out. I think with non-angled pads you get an impression of less treble too.

BTW as crazy as it sounds, it does seem like the K702/Q701 has better imaging with flat pads

Don't forget that AKG mentions the 65th has specially selected/matched drivers. Not sure of what this means, but I always felt that with headphones, variations between drivers existed more than we think.

Can't really afford one right now. My Q701 was only $235 and I don't really need more bass. Not for $170 more. Maybe when things get better I'll buy one.

EDIT: I'll buy some 65th pads and compare them to my K601 pads which are flat.

Maybe the K601 pads on the Q701 will sound better/different with my new amp/dac. Not sure if I tried K601 pads when using my ODAC.

Ordered some 65th pads for the Q701.
I'll be very surprised if they work well with the Q701.
It may even require using the K601/K702 inner grills to get the correct sound.

Q701 inner grills have the foam and less air gets inside.

BTW the 65th pads are not in stock and I was told they'll take 3 weeks to ship. Doesn't bother me any.
They won't charge you until they ship.

OK off to try K601 pads..

Oh yeah.. i can't imagine memory foams helping much for me for comfort. I mean there is no clamping force to begin with and the stock pads don't compress much anyway.
The Q701 is perfectly comfortable to me and I'm not bothered by the bumps.
I do thing non-angled pads are better for comfort. Weird, I know.

EDIT: K601 pads actually seem to make the Q701 less warm/bassy. Maybe it's just more accurate to the recording, but I don't know if I like it.

Now my Q701 sounds closer to the K601.

The problem there is that the headband is VERY, VERY hard to remove and replace. The pieces holding it in placed where snapped on by a machine. It's incredibly hard to get it to look and feel right if you attempt to do it yourself. I've seen someone try to put the K601 headband on the 701, and he stated it was very hard.

Lol, 80 dollars for the headband (the older ones). That would make the K701/2/Q with headband cost close to the Annies.

Is that the price per pad? or for a pair of pads?
