AKG K702 65th Anniversary Edition

Tried these Anniversary editions and thought they were excellent. More bass than I remember from getting out of the K701 and smoother, but it's a long time since I've heard the K701. I've always wanted a pair, but since my home listening is mainly done with speakers and from experience and memory the 701's were picky about gear, so I just dropped the idea.

Ran the Anniversaries out of my portable and they performed really good. I preferred them to even the HE400's or 500's. Would love to see some measurements showing differences, because they were much better than what I remember the K701's being. Tempted to get a pair...

My thoughts exactly. Extended bass and smoother sound overall. Very balanced sound and definitely way better headphones than the HE400's IMO (hifimans are quite heavy and don't give good seal on my head).

I bought the anniversary.  Hope it doesn't disappoints.  Stay tuned for unboxing video and compare against K701, Q701.

Awesome. I'm really interested to hear your opinion on these.

I didn't pay retail so no return if I don't like it.  I think I got a decent price.

Just read through the thread and I would NOT have thought the overall consensus mirrored mine! I was totally ready to put the "louder but also better bass" under the table as a product of my own imagination. Glad to see it's just not me. Even more tempted to see measurements now :)

BTW, tried them at the same Expo as you did. I took them out of the room though and compared them to the Shure SRH1840s, which next to the K702 ani's were very underwhelming. I agree that the AKG's were better than the Hifimans as well, even the HE500's. The somewhat monotonic bass of those kinda put me off, though the HE400 bass should be pretty much flawless according to measurements... Maybe it was the upper bass drizzle, dunno.

Seems like lots of good, affordable open backs on the horizon. These ones, the X1, and updated AT line.

I want ALL of those, but alas...

Hey nice! At the Expo I was lucky enough to test HE400's, HE500's, HD800's, T1's, K702's, Anniversaries, PS500's, Spirit one's and the whole Shure SRH line (among many others), from which the T1's, HD800's, HE500's and anniversaries were definitely the most impressive headphones. When the price differences are taken into account, the anniversaries were probably the most impressive headphones of the bunch (price aside and HD800's win easily). That's why I ordered the anniversaries from St Paul's Sound right after the expo (395€ incl. shipping). Heck, I would even go as far as to say that the anniversaries were one of my favorite products of the whole expo (the others being amphion two15 and aurelia aniara speakers).

Anniversaries are pretty close to K550's except you get better transparency and soundstage, exchangeable cable and pads, more balanced sound and extremely good overall comfortability (light structure, auto adjustable headband and non-sweaty tight but soft memoryfoam earpads that cover even the larger ears). I'm very happy with my purchase.

Before I create too much hype I have to say that I'm by no means a headphone specialist. I consider myself as a "mediumcore" audiophile who is more into speakers than headphones but loves good audio presentation despite of the source. In headphones I appreciate clarity, transparency, soundstage and comfortability above anything else (especially comfortability since I use headphones from 1 to 8 hours a day). I also want my headphones and speakers to be suitable for multiple music styles.
