I recently purchased a k601 and I am very happy with it. The build quality and finish are both good. And of course they sound great.

I thank you very much, as this is the information I have been seeking.  I was holding out hope that I might be able to find a "Made in Austria" K601.  My reasons for avoiding the Chinese version (and other Chinese products) have little to do with quality.

I wonder if the Q701 is made in China?  As far as I can tell, it seems it is not, but I do not know the current status.

The only AKG model that I KNOW is made in Austria is the new 65th anniversary edition k702. They are for sale around the web - it seems like the cheapest option is to go to a real shop but on ebay and make an offer. Some people are selling for $450 on ebay, so maybe if you made an offer you might get it for less?

I know proaudiostar.com is doing this and they are a reliable retailer - I bought my k601 from there (as well as some guitar gear).

Thanks, folks...

I just ordered the Q701.  I am very interested to see how they do with my Schiit Asgard.  The Asgard has been very impressive with all that I have thrown at it thus far.

Here's another secret to get your K601 cooking without having to sell off a major organ or three :)

$368USD + $60 for shipping to the USA - 2 x pieces of Wolfson WM8741 DAC and a clean, neutral
sounding head amp section that delivers 900milliwatts into 100ohms - just what the K601 needs
(no actual 120ohm spec exists but rest assured there is still 300mW on offer at 300ohms)

Audio-gd NFB 5.2 Tenor TE8802 USB - the latest USB TE8802 chip sounds even better than
 the old going NFB-5.0

Has anyone tried this with the K601's? I'm in the market for a new DAC/amp for my beloved 601's and I this has piqued my interest. I was pretty much settled on the Yulong D100, but it would seem this has a considerably more powerful amp section. Any thoughts?

depends on how particular u want the synergy to be. or if u believe in synergy at all. i would not trust one or a million people's review on anything synergy related, because my own perception is never the same. If you are anything at all original of a human being, you won't be either. just a matter of how much by percentage.

Aren't the K601's discontinued altogether now? I can't find them on their website, nor do any e-tailers here carry them any more.

Mine are made in Austria, but then I bought them 2 and a half years ago.

like seriously, every online retailer I can find in the USA sells it for 200 bucks and they are made in Austria. But then that does not mean good quality at all. Mine has like 2 dead spot on the mesh vent right outside the middle silver ring. I have no idea whether it will affect the headphone sonically or not, but it look sure dumb

I have the older brother NFB10 and the pairing is very nice, although now I have reterminated the K601 to use as XLR - which is what these puppies need!

I have had my k601s for about a month now and I feel that they just keep getting better and better. I am lousy at using all the appropriate audiophile lingo to describe sound but it has basically gone like this: 1 month ago: great classical, great jazz, poor rock, two weeks ago: Amazing classical, amazing jazz, solid rock, Today: amazing classical, amazing jazz, and strong rock performance.

A great pairing with the gilmore lite and my xda-1. Just gotta keep burning them in!

Yes, I really do think the K601 is an underrated headphone. I've had mine for 2,5 years now and I've been extremely pleased with them.

I bought a Yulong D100 from the classifieds here at Head-Fi which should arrive in not too long, which will be replacing a vintage NAD 1020A/X-Fi combo. I'm looking forward to hearing how this matches up with the K601's!

I've also been looking at doing a DIY project, and as such the Bottlehead Crack looks perfect. I know that due to its OTL design it isn't a good match with the low-impedance K70x's, but the 601's are 120 Ohms (compared to the 60 Ohms of the 70x's) so I'm thinking this might work out ok. Either way I've been looking at getting some Sennheiser HD650's down the road anyways as a "side-grade" to my 601's.
