Don't know why I never posted in this thread until now, seeing as I've had #4795 for six months now. I really need a new source though, as trying them on the lounge set-up a few times again definitely pulled out a few very quiet details in music I've never noticed from my X-Fi + OBH-21SE combo before.

Hi there,

I'm probably going to be ordering the K601s in a few days, but I'm a little nervous about some of the sound signature descriptions I've read. I've just had the ATH-AD700 and had to return them due to lack of bass and a sharp top end, could someone reassure me that the K601s have a smoother top end and adequate bass? I don't need masses of bass, just enough so that you don't notice it as being obviously missing.

Don't be nervous.

The 601s are far from "bass monsters," but I don't think they'll let you down. They pick up the low end quite well, and they are not shrill at the top end. I don't know if I'd call them warm, though. They feel open, airy and not too out of whack - i.e. no over-emphasis on one area of the sound spectrum.

I'm listening to "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath, and enjoying the presentation.

Your sig says that you sold your 601's... so you had them for less then a week, then sold them? Why?

#5801 arrived at me today. For the moment I don't have an amp, I'm still waiting for it. I hope will arrive soon...

I also have Grado SR60, I can say it's a major improvement of sound stage, more detalied and more clear, the highs are smoother and the bass is a little bit weaker than SR60 but more defined and dynamic. I noticed this differences without an amp, when it will be arrived these differences will be more obvious. Maybe I think it's a major improvement because I don't like so much the agreassive soung of SR60, even if it is so, the K601 noticeable sounds better.

Is there a problem that I started to listen(burn in) without an amp?

Could you elaborate a bit? Particularly in comparison to the headphones shown in your sig?

TIA.

Listening to The Lord of the Rings trilogy sound track at the moment, and the recording just sounds so good on the K601.

My personal experience isn't worth much, but I've listened to my K601s through a home made tube amp built by a friend, and through the iBasso D1, and I like the solid state amp much more.

However, I believe I read in one of Asr's reviews that he thought the K601 would be best matched with a solid state rather than a tube amp.

I use these phones with the MAD Ear+ & XP-7. I personally prefer the MAD/K601 combo (bigger soundstage/more open with a touch more bass), although it's probably not really a fair amp comparison. FWIW, the Hornet does a bloody good job with the K601 too.
