AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

For what it's worth, I think the K612's are light-years better than my former Q701's. (I hope the guy who bought them from me doesn't see this.

I found the Q701's too bright and the sound-stage was too wide for the multitude of vinyl rips I listen to. Yes a lot of vinyl (not all) tends to be wider staged than CD's. I think the K601's sound-stage is dead on perfect...Even for CD's too. (No I did not do the bass mod on the Q701's)

I got my K612's 'opened boxed' from Razordog. I specifically asked for the Austria pair just for better resale value if I should ever sell them. But it's interesting to note that when I received them, the box was completely sealed and headphones seemingly new.

Hi folks, I've wondered if the Bottlehead Crack is able to drive the AKG K612 to its full potential? Crack output impedance is 120ohm and up while AKG impedance is 120ohm as well. If any of you has both HD650 and K612 and compare how they sound on the Crack, I'd greatly appreciate.

My friend bought a cheap pair of K601's a while ago and yesterday he gave them to me for testing. At first I didn't like them much - just a hint of bass and quite hard to drive. But the more I listen to them, the more I start to like the sound: the mids are just so sweet!

Sucks that I have to give these back to him

I've had an extended go with the 612 and 702 pads now. It's weird but sometimes, I feel like it's spot on tonally and other times, the bass is too much with a lowered top end.

The other thing is that I 'think ' the pads have gone down a bit, which is why I'm starting to really enjoy them now, whereas I couldn't listen for long before, when the pads were spanking new.

I suspect that there could have been some changes as the pads have softened/ moulded to my head and I hadn't given them enough time to settle when I first got them.

Perhaps this is the reason why there are different reports on k702 pads. My first reaction was there from the start, but now, my mind is changing and Im starting to think it is actually better with the K702 pads worn for a month or so!!

My k601 with standard pads sounds relatively thin by comparison, but the 612 sounds beautifully full and the detail is still there.

Robakri, Thomann sells the pads, but they are sold singly which is pretty daft. Not many people would buy one pad for a headphone so in a way, it's a bit of a rip off imo. They aren't particularly cheap, but they really do alter the sound in mostly positive ways.

The sound is still darker though and you said that you aren't particularly happy with a darker sound earlier..... although you may not believe me being 'some guy on the internet' (I'm a mod on another site and use headphones to work with since I'm a musician and use headphones in studios a lot of the time)

I think the pads need to be worn for a while though, or flattened a bit!! It's worth doing.

This is my feeling as well with the K612/Q701. And when I put the narrower 612 pads on my 701's, the bass was way too thin. So I guess it makes sense that when these pads narrow over time, the bass will decrease.

My K701 pads were well worn when I made my most recent impressions, but then again the K702 pads might be different. I don't believe I've compared the two since I washed the K701 pads, however, and I don't think I washed my K601 pads anyway which I'm planning to do soon, so I'll give them a try once I have.

Mine seem to have settled and the sound remains really good. I'm just hoping the pads don't go too much flatter. In fact, I seem to have also pushed them flatter when I put them onto the headphone. They were a bit awkward to get on and they didn't click into place too easily so I used brute force which meant the pads got squished.

I'm really wondering whether it he condition of the pads has been causing conflicting reports. Mine are still really full sounding, but not as fat as I first thought when I got them

I'm sure it's not acclimatisation since I have many headphones and don't stick with one in particular.

My first impressions have been reversed. I now prefer the K702 pads. Really strange.

Can anyone with a pair of K612's (Not K601's) do a detailed review of their bass performance with a moderate amp (stereo receiver, etc)?

I have had the K601's previously, and ultimately wasn't quite pleased with the extension.

Some tracks I usually use to explore with are (you'll obviously want higher quality versions):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jTg-q6Drt0 (low drone bass)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBgQuH4xPmA (lots of low bass stuff going on, some of it subtle)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbe3CQamF8k
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7K72X4eo_s (third part of the heartbeat?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otvGoSmEDIQ (whole album, but it's really something)

http://youtu.be/qORYO0atB6g?t=37s (album version, of course)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqRERtIA8I (808's at 0:38)

(Of course if you have some test tracks that you think work better, tell me what they are!)

Basically, I'm curious about the 20-80hz region. I have lots of music that has some interesting stuff going on down there that was sometimes not quite presented as well as I'd like, and I felt like the K601s didn't do the job well enough for me under about 80 hz.

Sure, they're open headphones, but other open phones do fine (HD650; Sennheiser PC360). Oddly enough my K240's don't do this well at all, as that region is below their massive upper bass hump, so it just sounds muddy.

So, I'm not as interested in how, say, a bass guitar sounds, because I'm sure the treble is sweet enough to make the upper harmonics lovely. I'm interested in how well the K612 can reproduce the lower bass region in certain types of electronic music.

Golden Ears has measured both the K612 and the K601. I wouldn't count on any significant change in lower bass extension, although I have not heard the K601s:
