AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

I run my k612 off the E09k as well. Low gain is plenty power for me while still maintaining a natural sound. The Bravo Ocean provides plenty of power with the stock tube. I can't wait to try some recently purchased tubes to see if I spot any differences/improvements.

Ordered the 612 pro on sale for $150 today. Will be interesting to see how it compares to my HD 600 with my TEAC UD-H01 DAC.

Yo,

The K12 and K601 aren't as hard to power as they were in the past due to gear becoming more powerful. I use the K501 and K601 on my SPL Auditor, but my Violectric V200 does just fine. Between the two, I prefer the Auditor for driving them.

Just got the K612 today. It's a bit early to give my final thoughts but I can give my first impressions after a few hours. Power wise my TEAC UD-H01 can drive them from moderate to ear bleeding levels from 11 to 12 o'clock on the volume dial. I would say they are definitely not easy to drive by any means, about 10% more power than my DT 770 Pro 250 Ohm. I have not done an A/B comparison with my HD 600 yet. So far I am liking the sound signature very much, mids are present and warm, great details are revealed in the upper end without being harsh. Great soundstage and imaging too. The only negative sound wise for me is the bass response, it's tight and accurate, just lacking a great deal in quantity and overall impact. I will be burning them in the next few days to see if things change. So far I am very happy though.

Hey, a question for you k601/612 owners out there: would you pay more or less for a set of used 601s that were modded to have a 4-pin mini-xlr connector wired inline towards the plug end, and came with 1/4" unbalanced and 4-pin RHA-style balanced connectors?

Would you prefer the connector be on the plug end or close to the housing?

Let me know what y'all think :)

I don't put value on mods at all. It's like cars, guys expect to get their money back for mods but most times it actually hurts resell value because it becomes a niche. Not everyone will want the mod, and there's always the question of workmanship. Is the mod done right? If not it could do more harm than good. I would stick to original stock stuff. Just my 2 cents.

What are some recommended not-too-expensive amps?

E09k? What else?

I just impulse purchases K612's now have to get some decent source gear.

I already have a Fiio E7 which is why I'm tempted by the E09k but it's a little expensive here in NZ. Maybe I can get cheaper/better amps from overseas?

O2 amp will be a lifetime long purchase for amps. DAC choices are myriad but so long as it does 16/24 by 96 its all good. Rule of thumb.

Warm bassy sound from tube amps. Clarity and clean sound from solid state amps. Its all a matter of choice.

I use a Fiio e12k. Using line out to a JDS O2 amp. It powers my 612k's wonderfully. Clean and loud as needed.

JDS O2, EHP O2? I see people talking about multiple O2 amps but I'm not sure which there referring to?

And yeah, I got my k612 for $130 from amazon. Got so excited at the price I hit buy before realizing I was gonna need to spend even more on an amp

That is the beauty of the O2 amp. You only purchase variants in options. By definition an O2 amp has to sound a specific way. Clean.

Buy the O2 model with the additional features as you please. But the sound should be the same. O2 is an open source design that by legal release cant be altered.

I got my k612s second hand for $90 CAD. Buying used is great. Caveat umptor of course.
