AKG K550 - NEW!!
Apr 3, 2012 at 11:20 AM Post #1,156 of 1,494
I thought the mid-bass and lower treb bumps are the worst of the KNS8400's. Lacks some bass-dynamics and absolute speed, but quite tuneful regardless. Otherwise they resolve my music near perfectly. What I'm hoping of the K550, is mid-range and treble articulation (don't think it rolls off at all) of the KNS8400 with K271 bass (very musically articulate, but could go deeper, though I don't get why people fret over something that has no relevance to instrumental music almost at all [sub bass]). Mmm, here's to hoping.

Maybe I should try re-damping/modding my 8400's for more linear bass presentation? Now that'd be something. Though people comment on them being bass-light, I think it is a tad hot, at least in indoors listening. While commuting the outside noise compensates for it pretty well though. Just listened to a Pekka Pohjola bass solo and some of the mid-bass notes had a bit too much volume, but not complaining too much since notes were absolutely distinguishable.

I think you missed my point entirely.

Ear cups are pretty much identical in size, but the diameter of holes inside the ear pads are smaller on K550's.  About 1 cm smaller. And yes, they're way too big for portable use. They have very small amount of clamping force, combine that with smooth pleather earpads and headband, and you have big bulky headphones which don't grip to your head well enough to be stable while walking around.

I disagree about the amount of clamping force, they're fine for walking around my house.

Or even outside. Thanks to cantscareme, I paid attention to the mechanism and have to admit that you have to tweak the cups a bit to find a good personal adjustment. But they stay on just fine, mainly from the traction between the ear pads and my skin :)

Why would you pay 350 dollars for a cable to plug it into a 250 dollar headphones? It makes no sense.

For the same reason some women buy expensive makeup?

Now that I have my AKG K550 I'm going to do the detachable cable mod.

The stock cable on the K550 is non-detachable.  Unfortunately, a new cable would require a hard-wire.

the sound/price  rivals that of a hd600+equinox......listening to FIREBIRD by STRAVINSKY rite this moment....whewwwww...
this cable adds clarity, seperation, slamm.....as if another veil is taken off the Q701, definitely worth picking up if u have an AKG somewhere gathering dust.
is this finally my ultimate die-with can...hmmmm.
