The K340s have nice bass!!!! The K340 should really outperform the 501, as the the 501 is a much cheaper headphone.

Yes I find the bass very accurate in the K340s, not sure which version I have (there are aledgedly 3 types of 340s, possibly more IIRC). If the bass is too thin or over saturated on the K340s then I would assume there is a problem with the production/mastering.
I use the K340s as a monitor headphone (within reason of course)

Never heard 501s, read many positive comments on them.

The K340 can be a little unforgiving with bad recordings, but this is a Headphone I can live with

I don't know as I live in the UK, I don't think there is a place in the UK that do mods for the 340?

headphile has done quite a bit with them, wood wise (I don't think theres a 'phone out there that headphile hasn't woodied)

There are a few mod besides recables.

1.As I mentioned an easy and also quite radical in its effect is the adjustment of the amount of filling behind driver. (easy)

2. Velor pad replacement (easy)

3. Elastic replacement (easy)

4. Headband replacement

5. Baffle removal (moderate)

6. Circuit bypass (experienced)

Well they are different. Its like they started from the same root so to speak but the K-501 focuses on musicality and coherency while the K340 focus more on detail and analysis.

To me the K340 sounds like what the K-701 should have been.
