I can't say that I mind my pair!

Best price to performance I've gotten from a headphone by a wide margin. Paid 45$. Elastics are worn out, so I need to fix that, and I dunno about the damping materials. Sounds excellent as is but I wonder if they're at their best. Is there a thread that can walk me through replacing damping materials, elastics, etc?

Huh. According to that thread, the foam makes zero difference in sound quality.
Thanks by the way.

It doesn't. The foam only helps to balance the cups when the headphone is on your head.
You're welcome.

You don't even have to open them up to fix the elastics. Just hook some elastics on the outer nubby parts and you'll be fine.

If the foam is all disintegrated though, cleaning them out would be good. I just hate opening up AKG headphones. Seriously one of the least DIY friendly frames possible.

^^ agree with that, just change out the old pads for new, I'm using the cheapest DIY of all, 2 rubber bands to pull the 2 earpiece's up to the headband
the previous owner of these used tape and pen caps... I wanted to make them look good by replacing the internal elastics. How hard is this to do?

You have to buy those elastics from AKG.
It's not very hard, but a bit of a hassle with all the parts that you must take care off.
As others wrote, hair elastics works the same way, they are easy to put on and don't look bad.

Di anyone happen to try Shure 840 earpads on the Sextetts?

Yes I did, they fit. Didn't liked the poor comfort those pads give. The sound wasn't too bad though.

They fit well w/o needing to stretch? Can you characterize the difference from the new K240 pads? Any recession in the mids?

No stretching at all, they fit perfectly.
I'm still not good in describing differences in sound. The stock vinyl pads doesn't surround my ears, so I don't have a proper seal with them.
Every other pad where my big ears fit in, does sound better.

There's no recession in the mids with the Shure pads.
In fact, I think the Sextetts are not that picky when it comes to different ear pads.
Even the big DT150 pads gives a good sound.
