Shootout: 114 Portable Headphones Reviewed (Xiaomi Mi Headphones added 04/21/2015)

What a fantastic, gripping review thread. Two of my current sets were reviewed.   I discovered the Panasonic HTX7s after being lured in by their styling. I wasn't blown away initially, as I found them quite bright for my liking, but burn-in has definitely helped them become my 'serious'...

    Sony MDR-XB500's? Opinions?

Which? The Sonys or the Panasonics?   At times the Pannys are mediocre, but for some odd reason, as the iPod's battery is getting low they sound a fair bit better, more open. I try not to be critical when listening as to me that's a bit too sterile when it's one of my favourite albums, so...

    Panasonic RP-HTX7 thread

I appreciate 'em. With roughly a thousand hours burn-in over the two years I've owned them, they aren't particularly unbalanced any more and the once boomy bass has settled to a more rounded nature. They seem to really enjoy hard rock and metal, but anything for want of a better word 'urban'...

    Sony MDR-XB500's? Opinions?

Just taken a punt on the 500s given how people say they're ideal for bassheads and I'd consider myself to be one at almost all times. They were in a clearance sale at Play-dot-com for £40 so seemed like a worthwhile investment.   I came looking for comparisons with the RP-HTX7s and was...

Best Closed Headphones for rap $60 and under

Panasonic HTX7s might be worth a look. Big bass and not much mids, so ideal for rap, in my experience.

Koss PPro users, listen to THIS.

Hmm, if it wasn't such an effort, wouldn't it be great if these digital processing techniques could be made available to work with any headphone to perform to the best that 'phone could handle. I imagine getting a new pair and downloading the driver file to set the module to work with that...

    The Lossy Deathwatch

Why is there so much 'I can't hear it so no-one else can' attitude around here? I find it belittles people who can detect differences. Everyone's ears are different and one person's perceived hearing ability isn't going to be the catch-all for everyone. If you have the hearing range and know the...

Apple Lossless format heavier on iPod battery?

In my experience, I've walked 45 minutes plus with my Classic using AIFF and it didn't need to stop and buffer to ram, which I was very surprised about. I can't say I've noticed worse battery life (charge mine roughly every two weeks if I use it nightly), but then I've had an iPod Mini and iPod...

Pictures of Your Portable Rig [Part XIII]

I got it from UK electronics store Maplins and posted about it to let UK owners know, but I saw a picture this weekend where someone had done the mod and they're the same design, so I'd guess they're one and the same.

iPod line out vs "good" headphone out

RE iPod Dock Line Outs; I have an 80gb Classic, that I use with the original iPod dock, which I got when I bought my first full-size iPod in April 2005. The line-out in this model is unaffected by the volume control on the iPod and that includes with the original 30gb Photo this Classic...

    The Lossy Deathwatch

I've done the same, although I've only got about 80gb in AIFF and now my iPod Classic is full, so some stuff gets left off unless I really want it. I thought I was going to be OK at 320kbps AAC, but still detected clipping and decided AIFF was the way to go as I'd dealt with it through...

Well you wouldn't hear it if your bass is that low. What frequency are you going to? Anything below 40hz is going to be ranging from faint to inaudible. Your equipment might not be going low enough either; my iPod for example goes to 20 hz and my headphones (the Panasonics I mentioned) go to 7 hz.

Alessandro Music Series One "2009 improved version" question

With these being differently shaped to the original, would they still be able to take the yellow 414 pads? I want them for the looks if I get a set of these.

no more market for flagship audio-only players?

Of all the companies, only Apple could realistically launch one of these and it wouldn't be that niche, imo. If they can sell the Shuffle and the concept of randomness, then I'm sure with their marketing power they can sell an audio-only player that majors on its fidelity. 200GB, 24bit...

The Sennheiser HD 800: The First Listen, The First Review

Don't know if anyone else has picked up on it as I haven't read all the pages (there's quite a few!), but they have a Bang & Olufsen style to them. I like them. A lot.

I'd recommend Panasonic RP-HTX7s if they weren't so uncontrolled, but they certainly go low enough for most needs. If you're interested, check audio cubes.

    post your grado mods....

Wow, those HD 414 pads look ace. I'm hoping to get MS-1s next, so how do the yellow pads affect the sound of those headphones (if at all)? I've not heard them [MS-1], just read about them on here and how they're suitable for rock music compared to SR80s.

Engadget to Monster Cables: We actually don't endorse your overpriced products.

I've voted it up. Nothing worse than good points getting down-voted because they go against the tone of the article or the consensus. I find it interesting that they got Dre to try different pre-production models before he settled on a sound signature and he didn't set one that at least...
