Roll Call: Who's building, built, or thinking of building a beta22?
I've decided to go with the 330mm wide HiFi2000 Galaxy Max case(s) for my 4 channel beta22. I just have to decide which one(s) of the following four options to go for: 1. Everything (including PSU and transformer) in a 280mm deep enclosure. (I'd screen the transformer in an interior metal...- Alick

Roll Call: Who's building, built, or thinking of building a beta22?
I'm just about to start building a four board fully balanced beta22. My only dilemma (currently) is finding a nice enclosure which won't cost an arm and a leg to ship to the UK. Best I can come up with locally is a 2U rack box which is a bit too big (wide) for my preferred location. Ideally, I'd...- Alick

Where's a good place to get starquad cable in the UK?
They also do BC (owned by Vishay) 0.1% metal film resistors (equivalent to Welwyn RC55) for 15p each. My winter project is a balanced four board beta22 and I'm considering trying them in that. EDIT: Woops, I suspect you meant Canford, not Rapid.- Alick

New! WNA MKll Head-amp kit.
I think Mike's too busy with his new toy. Quote: Should I just throw them in the bin or try soldering such small chips When I get my self sorted out I'll get some of Dr White's adapters and have a bash at the smd soldering and see how the AD8065 sounds. The SMD soldering isn't...- Alick

New! WNA MKll Head-amp kit.
Paco, in the assembly instructions, David mentions that if you use a PSU providing greater than +/-15V, you will need heatsinks on Tr1 - Tr6. Sounds like you definitely need to fit them; check your instructions. I presume you're not using the rail splitter?- Alick

New! WNA MKll Head-amp kit.
I seem to recall it was a hell of a struggle to get the heatsinks in, there being not much room for them. Hopefully, they'll come out easier, but I'll leave them in place until I know I'm happy with the sound (as I'm confident I will be) ... just in case. No output cap's - I can't wait. EDIT...- Alick

New! WNA MKll Head-amp kit.
Quote: Zobel fitted, removed lamps (replaced with ferrite inductors or zero ohm links) removed both input and output caps and yes IMO (to my ears) there is quite a vast improvement. The zobel is probably unnecessary with FET opamps so if you just whip out all three LM6171's and remove the...- Alick

... then there are the times you remember to put the barrel on the cable, but upside down ... Maybe we should all start using the 90 degree jacks with the barrel cap which can be put on over the cable.- Alick

The Quality of DIY..
Quote: You can't polish a turd. You can use the best materials and know what you are doing and it will only sound as good as the source or amp. Are you telling me a good cable can make everything sound 25-50% better? No, people tend to look at this from the wrong angle. Anything...- Alick

Replacing loose screws on Hammond Enclosure
Stevie, I have the same problem. I presume it's the wee case which we've used for the WNA head-amps you're talking about? Some of mine have been slack/stripped from the first removal so I'm not convinced that it's constant removal that's really the problem. I've been meaning to try a few things...- Alick

Impedance and Ohm question.
Whilst the effect of the explanations above is a reasonable guide, they are not entirely accurate. Impedance is the quantity that determines the amplitude of current for a given voltage in an AC circuit, nothing more, nothing less. It is not a measure of quality and whilst providing a guide to...- Alick

Apologies for the bump but I want to order a pair of Creative's or Sennheiser's MD33 variants and I'm keen to know if: (a) anyone knows if there are any differences between the two which would make the Sennheisers worth 50% more and (b) if any MD33 (or similar variant) owners can confirm...- Alick

Thanks for the feedback. I suppose the two remaining questions for me are (a) do they stay put in your ears and (b) is there any reason to buy the Sennheisers for £38 when I can get the Creatives for £24?- Alick

I've been procrastinating about purchasing a set of canal phones for use with my Rio Karma for some time but don't want to spend a reasonably significant amount of money on Shures or Ety's to discover that I don't like the physical sensation of stuffing electronics into bodily orifices. Mike I'd be grateful for the loan of the spare pair of AD 843's when you get them, thanks. As always, I'll be honest. In some ways, it might be good news if you have a sinus infection as it should be relatively simple to sort out and it might well be the cause of many of your recent...- Alick

Sounds very interesting Mike. I'd like to try the AD 843s. I see no heatsinks in your picture. Does that mean you're running with the original QC settings? Any plan to try the AD 843 with the higher QC setting? Where did you buy the AD843s? Quote: I'm not sure if he has got any adaptor...- Alick
