The V3 are also more sensitive. I believe 32 Ohms and 94dB of sensitivity. V2 was 35 Ohms and 90 dB. It seems clear that a fair amount has changed.

I wonder if the "howling noise" is what I described as coil whine that my copy had. That was the one major issue I had with the headphones.

I would agree. The HX and H95 are sufficient in ANC and transparency to me but not the same level as the ANC focused headphones. And I was ok with that because the sound quality was better. However they do have a constant hiss which APM do not exhibit at all and then of course the coil whine issue.
