Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up
When Modi 3+ came in December 2020, Jason mentioned "we have a little over 1 year of AKM DAC stock before we’re boned". I predict I'll have an ESS-based Modi with USB-C connector in my Christmas stocking.- DesBen

Ottawa Meet: Sunday, April 24, 2005
I'd like to invite myself if you guys don't mind. I'm thinking about getting an Ear+ amp and I'd love to hear Zanth's. I'm not yet sure what I'll bring, but have a look at my profile and let me know if there's something you'd like to hear. I'll also bring a Nikon D70 so we can have decent...- DesBen

SACD damaging to headphones?
Psychoacoustic studies have shown that although we cannot directly detect sine waves above 16-20kHz, we can certainly detect their presence in music. One study went further and showed that people noticed an improvements when the system extended to 40kHz instead of 30kHz (ranges might have been...- DesBen

To Canadians Re: Shipping
USPS. Cheap, Fast, Reliable. Usually get my stuff in 5-7 business days. On most small items (like headphones), they don't even bother to charge taxes, even though the little green sticker declares a value of $60... If if they do, it's a fair 15%+$5. With the other carriers, you always pay...- DesBen

Headphones for Classical Music?
I'll second AKG for classical. The K501 are superb. I think I prefer them to my HD600 for orchestral works. Very open and detailled, and great at portraying instrument tones. Oh, and superb soundstage too. However, I'm not sure the iPod could do them justice. These cans need a LOT of juice to...- DesBen

Why are the cheapest and most expencive headphones low impendence?
I was simply stating the MSRP (that I found on Stereophile's site)... I know the actual retail is much lower, but then, it doesn't look as impressive. Quote: Originally posted by Mindless $4030? hmm.... You can buy them for $2999 with the SRS-717t or solid-state amp at audiocubes- DesBen

Why are the cheapest and most expencive headphones low impendence?
Studio cans are typically high-impedance (600 Ohm). This is because they are often run in parallel. 8 pairs of 600-ohm headphones in parallel present a load of 75 ohm (if I remember correctly Physics 101). Now, if you were to put 8 pairs of 32-ohm headphones in parallel, the load becomes 4 ohms...- DesBen

what's a good amp for the cd780?
Maybe I should add that my portables are recent cheap Sony PCDP. In general, the headphone out lacks power and extension: probably to allow for that "36 hour Stamina" Sony claims. Also, there's something very wrong with the midrange: thin with a strong "plastic" coloration. That's the bad news...- DesBen

what's a good amp for the cd780?
Almost no headphones need a dedicated external amp (except K1K and electrostats), but almost all benefit from one. That being said, the CD780 do sound a lot better with good power behind them. They aren't very demanding, but they certainly are more than my Grado SR-60. The CD780 actually sound...- DesBen

Your ratio music vs hardware
5:1 music:gear You guys with only $200 spent on music or a ratio the opposite of mine make me sick. But at the same time, I understand: I was there at one point. I feel dissapointed with HP-1s
Tho there are exceptions, Grado's 32 ohm present a tough load for tube headphone amplifiers. Sure, you can optimize the output transformer for the Grado (as is probably the case with he Melos), but most tube amps are probably targetting higher-impedance headphones. This presents the output tube...- DesBen

Why do you have multiple headphones of the same type?
I like a lot of different styles of music. The headphones I use for quiet jazz trio might not work so well with trashy hard techno. Depending on what I'm listening to, I'll use different headphones.- DesBen

MG Head OTL for K501?
To the folks who have heard this combination, I'd like to hear your opinion: is the MG Head a good match for the K501? I currently use DT770 with the MG Head and keep the volume knob between 9 and 10 o'clock. So I don't think power will be the issue. But I've read several posts saying the...- DesBen
