Sure they do- if it's a card and it produces sound, you've got yourself a sound card, which includes your motherboard/card which has its (onboard) DAC and AMP. I think this question is less about whether sound cards exist- spoiler: they do exist- but whether anyone would bother buying one...

At risk of being a jerk- huh?! What year is this?! You almost can't buy a notebook computer these days without getting a SSD and if you opt for one with a HDD, you'll get a lot more storage for your dollar but who uses a notebook as a storage repository, anyway? That's what the cloud is for, or...

I just now learned of this and am contemplating attending.   The problem is my gear- the only stuff I could really share would be my Grado SR225's and my Sennheiser HD 25-1 ii's, both which are not the most unique gear.   Would anyone even want to listen to either?   -S

I've had both the 558s and the 600s. and though I had the 600s about two years ago, I believe they were smoother on the upper end than the 558s. No need to buy new 600s, just check the classifieds on this site.

Since both headphones are from the same brand, you could call the manufacturer and get their feedback- tell them your requirements, etc.

By "black," I mean free of any white noise, hissing, static, etc. Listening through EARPHONES ONLY, often through Etymotics, hence the requirement for blackness. Not using headphones at all, so no need to power any high-impedance full size cans. I will be using it with pc windows 7 notebook...

I have found them!   They are the Etymotic MK5 earphones.   $60.   Un-blingy.   Quick ingress and egress, at least if you use them with single-flanged silicone tips.   Fast, speed-metal-friendly sound.                       Yay!
