    Someone explain last.fm to me

I've used last.fm from when it was still Audioscrobbler, but I only just subscribed. You gain a few little things on the site, but I did it as much to reward them for the service. It's so cheap I think all their users should pay up. I like the stats and I often stream neighbour radio to find new...

How many people here will not get Windows Vista?

I'm using Ubuntu Linux and I'm sticking with it. Vista doesn't offer anything extra that I need, but it does restrict my freedom to do as I please with my PC. I'm not a gamer, but I can find enough Linux games to entertain my kids.

How many of you here play an instrument?

My main instrument is guitar. I've been playing for many years, but haven't done much performing. I had classical lessons as a kid, then just messed about on electrics. I just bought an acoustic to try and encourage me to play more. I play a little bit of piano. I did an evening class that...

    Thinking of using Ubuntu.

I'm using Amarok on (k)ubuntu and generally like it. My main issue is that I just started ripping to FLAC and Amarok has some problems with the files. I can't change position within a track and they all end a few seconds early. I believe this is actually a problem with the audio engine (Xine) as...

If you were to buy a TV now, which technology would you buy into?

I'd love a nice big (e.g. 40") screen, but just can't justify the cost right now. Our last change was from a 32" rented Philips CRT to a 28" Toshiba CRT that I got for nothing from someone who bought a plasma. I hardly watch TV and we're not likely to get HD soon as we don't feel the need to pay...

    Doctor Who

I grew up watching Pertwee and Tom Baker and really enjoyed it. I watched the later ones too, but gave up before Sylvester. Now my kids are really into the new version. It's a different thing altogether. They have reasonable effects and pack a whole story into one, or sometimes two episodes...

What Live concerts have you attended?

Has this thread really been going for over 3 years? I only just noticed it. I did a summary of most of the major gigs I've seen on my last.fm journal. Ranges from Queen in '84 through to Eels and Flaming Lips this year. These days I would prefer to go to smaller, local gigs, but there's a...

Is it possible to make an EXACT copy of a CD?

I've thought about this on and off. Assuming you use software like EAC that makes all the checks to ensure that you have the exact bits that were on the CD, you can have a perfect copy on your hard drive in your preferred lossless format. That process can take hours if necessary as you only do...

    Bowie's Earthling

I listened to Earthling again recently. I think it's a great fun album. Saw him do it live too. Had a great drummer. I need to listen to Outside again some time to refresh my memory. I was less impressed with that in concert. It seems to me that Mr Bowie is having fun in his old age.

How many have used their PDA as a source?

I've used my Palm Zire 71 with Aeroplayer a lot for playing music on the move. I now also have an Acer n35 with GSPlayer that has the advantage of going a lot louder. The Palm is know for it's weak output. I think that both can only handle 1GB SD cards, but that's enough for most of the trips I...

    Anyone using Linux?

I've been using purely Ubuntu Linux for a while now and don't miss Windows, but then I don't play games. I use Amarok for listening and rip using the feature in Konqueror where you can view a CD as the different audio file types (WAV, FLAC, OGG, MP3) and just drag them to where you want them...

    Bose headphones...overpriced and crappy sound?

My latest edition of Which magazine has a review of headphones. Unfortunately the details on their web page are only available to subscribers, but I will summarise the results. I'm wary of pasting their text here in case they decide to enforce their copyright. Top scorers were Bose QC2 (89%)...

How well do Grados hold up physically over time?

I've had my SR-60 for a year. Some of the silver is wearing off the lettering, but that's no big deal. The main problem I have is that now and again the right earpiece falls off the metal rod. I just have to push it on again. The pads seem to have changed colour a bit. Looking slightly green...

Whats your Favorite PC Music Playback Software??

I've been using QCD for quite a while. It allows for a very minimal GUI if you prefer that. I use the tooltray icon to play and pause plus a tiny skin that shows the current track details. It's small enough to fit in the bottom bit of a window. It doesn't have much in the way of library...

Who are some good female artists???

I've not seen Neneh Cherry mentioned here. Has guested on lots of stuff as well as doing her own thing. What about Sam Brown (daughter of Joe Brown). I had to get hold of her version of Stop to erase a terrible recent cover from my mind. We saw Mariza last year. Incredible Portuguese fado...

Do digital interconnects make a differnce?

I'm just a little sceptical of the very expensive digital cables you can buy. As long as the bits all get to the other end they could be interpretted correctly. Just look at the cables we use for 100Mb networks. Very cheap and handling much higher bit rates over much longer distances than audio...

    Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters.

I've liked the Foos for a while now. Grohl writes some good pop songs and they perform them well. It's not the most demanding music, but it's fun. I saw them play at Earl's Court in London in December and they put on a good show. The sound was not that great, but Grohl is a natural on stage...

Do digital interconnects make a differnce?

My gear is not high end (Yamaha 430 receiver, Acoustic Solutions DVD, Yamaha NSP100 speakers). I have been using a crappy audio cable that came with some bit of kit as my digital link. I don't think I've ever heard an audio glitch from it. In fact it sounds fine to my ears. Maybe any distortion...

Sennheiser PX 100: How much sound do they leak and/or block?

The PX200 block both ways to some extent. I had to give up wearing them for work as I couldn't hear my phone and I don't listen very loud. I use then on planes and they block some of the background noise.
