Power supplies for Squeezebox and USB D/A converter?
I have a Squeezebox Touch and two Abrahamsen A-dac usb D/A converters that I'd like to build decent power supplies for. Just as an experiment to see if they'll sound better. (...And just because it's fun, of course.) The D/A converters have 24V DC 0.5A wall warts, and the Squeezebox has a 5V...- steinba

Delivery times from Par-Metal?
I ordered two series 20 cases from Par-Metal a couple of weeks ago, got the paypal bill in my e-mail, paid it and haven't heard a thing from them since. I've tried getting hold of them by e-mail, but without success. I searched the forums and got the impression that this is "normal". I'm in...- steinba

What wallwart for TREAD/Pimeta
I'm putting together a "laptop sound survival box" consisting of a Tread, a pimeta and a Bantam dac. I'm going to pick up a wallwart/psu for it. Would something like this be OK? Clas Ohlson - Batterieliminator, batterieliminatorer (Sorry about the norwegian) It claims to output max...- steinba

Pimeta question. (CRD?)
I've populated a Pimeta V 1.1 board, and I'm wondering about two (optional) diodes in the parts list called "CRD" (Current regulating diode) and "Current source configuration; CRD". What are these supposed to do, and where do they go? I'm running this off a Tread and a 24V wallwart. The...- steinba

DIY DAC with mostly through hole components?
Is there a DAC kit around with mostly through hole parts available? I get that the DAC chip itself probably must be SMD, but other than that? Anyone?- steinba

How to remove the EU volume cap from 6.5G iPod Classic?
I just got a 120GB iPod Classic, and have heard rumors about downloadable software to get rid of the volume cap on European iPods. Does anybodyknow where that can be found? ...Or simply how to get rid of the volume limiter? Thanks!- steinba

Cover art on iPod without getting files from iTunes?
I have a new iPod Classic on the way, and from what I understand, they're making a big thing out of this "Coverflow" feature. I have ripped, downloaded and otherwise aquired my rather substantial collection of music myself, and will probably never buy a single song from iTunes. So, I was...- steinba

All my solder points turn grey and dull!
I admit that I'm a total noob. All my solder ponts go grey and dull as they cool off. Nothing like the shiny ones my more savvy friend manages. I try to take care to make everything still and steady while soldering. I have problems with it, but I also try to heat the component leads and to...- steinba

STEPS parts list
I still have a STEPS board lying around, that I'd like to use for my loooong overdue PPAv2 build. Does anoyne still have - or know where to find - the BOM? It's gone from Tangent's site, so I trust the forum can help. Thanks.- steinba

DAPs with basic mass storage/file transfer?
Are there any modern and good sounding flash or hdd portable players with good old mass storage support, where I can copy and move files just like on any usb stick, and won't have to cope with syncronising libraries like in iTunes etc. Tips will be greatly appreciated.- steinba

HD based mp3 player with line out
For me the perfect portable player would have good SQ, a fixed volume (non attentuated) line out (without having to use a dock or an adapter), mp3, flac and ogg/vorbis support, be hard disk based and have a 12V cigarette lighter socket power supply option. Does something like this exist...- steinba

I'm lazy. Please bear with me.
I'm thinking about building a DAC to use between my PPAv2/STEPS and computer or CD player. Hence I need both S/PDIF and USB inputs. (I guess the spdif input needs to be RCA, or is toslink also an alternative for a DIY DAC?) Would anyone care to give me a hint about which of the DAC projects...- steinba

M Audio Audiophile 192 vs M Audio revolution 7.1
So... I'm finally realizing that the Audiophile 192 doesn't do it for me. The OSS linux driver just doesn't cut it. I want a card that works with Linux straight out of the box. The best alternative I've found seems to be the M Audio Revolution 7.1, which has the same chipset, different opamps...- steinba

USB DACs - n00b question
Right. I've got another newbie question. An USB DAC seems like a great idea for getting good sound out of a laptop, but how does one get the computer/sound card to send the digital bitstream (music signal) to the USB port? Do the DAC chips come with a driver for this? Does the computer...- steinba

PX100 impulse buy
One of the larger pro audio dealers in Oslo recently had a clearance sale on everything Sennheiser, so well, I had to buy something. I picked up a PX100 for NOK 213,- (40% off) or about $33. First, I must say that they sound surprisingly good for something this small and cheap. Second: They...- steinba

Would this be a good idea. (cheap balanced hd650 system)
I have a Senn HD650 with a cardas cable, and I'm gonna be building a PPAv2 soon. I have a M Audio Audiophile sound card with balanced TRS outputs. Would it be a good idea to put dual TRS connectors on the original hd650 cable and use it with the 650s straight out of the sound card for a cheap...- steinba

Signal level from a sound card pre-out into a PPA...
I'll mainly be using my PPAv2 with my computer as the source component. I have an M Audio Audiophile 192 in there, so I suppose it'll be OK. (Sometimes I might use my Marantz CD6000 KI Signature or a portable source as well.) I'm wondering what is the "best practice" for controlling the...- steinba

Anyone play guitar?
I was just wondering if there were many guitarists on head-fi, and what gear they are using. As for myself, I'd rather say that i own a guitar that I sometimes try to play a little. Anyways, here's my axe: http://www.nyetwork.net/cs-0079.html Show off your gear, everybody.- steinba

Cheap ebay op-amps. How do they do it?
I just bought some op-amps off ebay, and can't help but wonder how it is possible to sell lots of brand new ICs that are supposedly sourced from large mail order electronics companies, for less than half of what I'd have to pay for identical chips from the large online shops directly. How do...- steinba

Has anybody done this? (balanced phones)
A friend of mine came up with this idea, that I thought was brilliant. ...But really simple, so I wondered if somebody had already tried it. Seems probable. Oh no, not again! What Opamps for a PPA?
I understand that some folks might find it annoying that I'm asking this question AGAIN, but hey! I've included a funny poll this time. I just can't decide what opamps I should use in my PPAv2. (I'll probably try all three alternatives eventually, but I can't decide what to try first.)...- steinba
