Time to upgrade.... ER-4S .... whats next?
I too started with a pair of ER-4S. When the upgrade bug hit me, I opted for a pair of HD-600's. The two headphones have very compatible sounds and if you look around, is a fairly popular combo. But, be warned... you should invest in third-party cables as the stock are not that great...- dlow

HELP! Windows downmixes 96 -> 44KHz!
After a few more frustrating hours, it seem that if I set the card to 96KHz and reboot, WinAmp will play at 96KHz, but will refuse to go back to 44KHz. The same for going the other way, very strange. Guess I'll just have to put up with that. Thanks for your help.- dlow

HELP! Windows downmixes 96 -> 44KHz!
I'm running the MAD plugin at 24-bits with the latest 2.81 WinAmp. This worked once upon a time.- dlow

HELP! Windows downmixes 96 -> 44KHz!
Arghhh! I'm trying to get WinAmp to play 24/96 audio on my Audiophile 2496, but looking at the Audiophile's control panel, the sample rate drops from 96 -> 44 every time I start playing music. I remember a long time ago, I found a setting buried somewhere that caused Windows to automatically...- dlow

Longer IC vs. longer speaker wire
...have), Studio/20 (Rear), Studio/CC and a Servo-15 sub. I really wish Paradigm still made their Active series speakers From what I hear, they are *extremely* good and can give $10000+ speakers a good run for their money. But alas, I'll just have to live with what I can buy. Hopefully, this... -
Longer IC vs. longer speaker wire
Is it better to place amplifiers closer to the speakers and run longer IC's or use shorter IC's with longer speaker wire? I guess it's less of an issue with stereo speakers since they're usually placed close to the source, but what about surround speakers? What about balanced vs. unbalanced...- dlow

Differential DACs?

Differential DACs?
I was flipping through the specs for a Denon 5803 and noticed that they have more DACs than output channels (16 DACS for 8 channels). Later on, they say that they put 2 DACs per channel in "differential mode" or optionally 4 DACS per channel in "dual-differential mode". With all the...- dlow

Porta Corda and Airbag?
I've got a porta CORDA in an airbag. It fits nicely. The only problem, is that the stock interconnect is a bit short. I had to rotate my MP3 pcdp (about 45 deg) so that the line-out was closer to the bottom of the Airbag. Trying to turn the porta CORDA on and off with headphones plugged in can...- dlow

A Canadian buying ER-4P's - any surprises?
If you live in Canada, definitely try to get your stuff on this side of the border because exchange + customs brokerage fees + taxes will absolutely demolish your wallet. IIRC, I got my ER4S's for about $450 CDN (taxes and shipping included) from CustomProtect (in BC). Anything you get from the...- dlow

Etymotic ER-6 or ER-4P: which is right for me?
If you're going to be into audiophile headphones for the long haul, then I'd recommend the ER4P. Once you have one, you will probably never want another headphone of its kind again. If you end up with the ER6, you'll always wonder what you're missing and probably end up shelling out the $$$ for...- dlow

High pitched whine over vocals
Now that Zanth has confirmed that I'm not going crazy I've noticed in several of my CDs, a faint hight pitched whine whenever the vocals come on. The sound is like the high pitched CRT whine you hear from monitors and televisions. So far, I've noticed it only on CDs that have choral music... -
Got the HD580... few questions however
I'm not a headphone break-in expert or anything, but here's my 2 cents. For headphones, what you're mainly trying to do is flex the membranes in the drivers. When fresh from the factory, or after long storage, they are a little stiff. With that in mind, you probably want to ease them up...- dlow

Is Ety ER6 good for a noisy office workplace?
Without music, I can still hear (with my ER-4S) stuff like my keyboard clicking and conversations are reduced to low mublings. Once you have music, even at a low leve, all ambient noise is gone. Every evening, when the cleaning crew files in, they invariably set off the security alarm (by...- dlow

Moral: Be nice to your ears or no Etys for a week
Personally, I keep ear wax down by rinsing my ears in the shower (we all shower right? ). Immersing one's head in water (ie. swimming) also does the trick. Afterwards, a gentle swab of the canals with a Q-tip (no deeper than the cotton part), followed by a good firm swabbing of the ear lobe and...- dlow

a better etymotic cable?
Wouldn't CAT5 be a little thick and bulky for ER-4's? It would be like Clous are to HD600's. Except, the extra weight might place unbearable strain on your ears (ie. threaten to pull them right out) and not allow you to wrap them over your earlobe to relieve the strain. -
Er6 Foamies at Etymotic
You should try the Canadian distributors listed at: http://www.etymotic.com/pnd/er4distributors.html I got my Etys from Custom Protect Ear in BC. Don't worry if their website doesn't list the Etys they really do carry them and their accessories.- dlow

Er-4s
<Pauses music> Yep, I can still hear the keyboard when there is no music playing. I can even hear people talking nearby, though it's very hard to understand what they're saying. <Unpauses music> But with music playing, everything is gone. Just me and my music.- dlow

Porta Corda Crossfeed is good
Is there any way to tweak the amount of cross-feed in the Porta CORDA? For my personal tastes, it's just a tiny bit shy of optimal. <dlow ducks for cover>- dlow

Are there any sonic differences between a original CD and a burnt copy?
It would make an interesting experiment to rip a CD using EAC and burn a duplicate (taking note of the CRCs generated by EAC). Double check that the CRCs are consistent and then put some sandpaper to the copy and try it again on EAC as well as regular CD players. If you can get EAC to work...- dlow

Are there any sonic differences between a original CD and a burnt copy?
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my really long post, so here is another. Jitter matters when you don't have flow control. Like my Toslink example, the sender is forced to send data at exactly the same rate as the receiver can consume it. Any significant variations will cause problems...- dlow

Are there any sonic differences between a original CD and a burnt copy?
...smooth out small timing flaws. But with errors, there is no recourse except to either play the damaged data or drop it. With CD-ROMs things are *potentially* much better. They have flow control, error detection and error correction. They typically spin faster than 1x, so you can quickly...- dlow
