Just noticed Audeze's LCD-4 page. Apologies if there is already a thread (I did search first). Anyone heard these yet?- MtnSloth

AUDIOPHILE LINUX (AP Linux)
Works with AMD A10 ... so guessing X-Win driver support should be there for Kabini as well. For the lurkers, sound is still a function of the motherboard drivers (or sound card if you have one installed). Auto-detected my motherboard's Realtek audio hardware (e.g. S/PDIF coax and TOSLINK)...- MtnSloth

Used both of those monoprice cables; they work just fine. The premium cables are indeed a little more rugged, but I'm not sure they are really worth the extra bucks unless you need a longer run where a more rugged cable makes sense. However, don't expect miracles. The premium cables can kink...- MtnSloth

No. Bifrost is PCM only AFAIK. [So only two-channel stereo] Oops. I should have thought a little more before the terse reply. Check you manual and see if the Panasonic will output those formats via toslink. It might be possible if your media is DVD-A or just plain old DVD (look for...- MtnSloth

New Oppo BDP-95
I don't want to discount the Mjolnir versus Lyr effect; but I have experimented with the Gungnir's XLR and RCA outs with the Mjolnir, and I don't hear the sort of difference that I hear with the BDP-95. Weird . . . me, the BDP-95 or maybe a bit of both.- MtnSloth

One more fly in the BDP-103/105 ointment: Cinavia. Quoting wikipedia: Quote: Boo!!! However, it may be that Cinavia won't prevent the playback of video ripped to hard drive. Cinavia is required of all new Blu-ray players starting in 2012. This is why it exists in the...- MtnSloth

New Oppo BDP-95
In case you missed the new thread, the replacement for the BDP-93 has been announced and is shipping, the BDP-103. There is an owner's thread on AVSforum. While not yet formally announced, there is an anticipation thread going for the BDP-105, the successor to the BDP-95. Also, I have been...- MtnSloth

New Oppo BDP-95
You may find AVSForum's BDP-95 owner's thread helpful regarding your questions about region free, streaming and NAS support. However, the BDP-95's remote and on-screen interface are not the ideal tools for navigating a large music collection. Unless they have added it recently, there is no...- MtnSloth

Schiit DACs (Bifrost and Gungnir down, one to go)? The information and anticipation thread.
If you are really curious about USB-to-SPDIF converters, you might find this long-ish thread interesting. Also waiting on Gungnir with some impatience. I won't be getting the USB option, as I've gone the dedicated file player route (an Auraliti PK100 with BNC S/PDIF).- MtnSloth

Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes
Typically one rips a CD to a compressed lossless (e.g. ALAC, FLAC) or lossy (AAC, MP3) audio file. The CD native AIFF files are uncompressed. In theory, there should be no difference between the decoded lossless file and the original uncompressed AIFF. I don't think I hear a difference on any of...- MtnSloth

Best option for gaming/music?
Quote: On Windows XP I might agree, but this is 2012 and EAX is dead. The Creative advantage just doesn't exist on Vista/Windows7 like it did on earlier versions of Windows. Notice the absence of Creative logos on modern games? It hasn't been a selling point for some time. However, I...- MtnSloth

The Schiit SACD/DSD Research Thread--Your Chance to Win a Bifrost!
1. Are you familiar with SACD? DSD? Yes. An authority on the subject? No. 2. Do you own any SACDs? Yes 3. If so, what percentage of your collection is SACD vs CD or files? Somewhere between 5% and 10% . . . and it is growing. 4. Is SACD/DSD decoding an important...- MtnSloth

Best option for gaming/music?
For gaming with headphones, I would go with astro's mix amp pro. If you don't do FPS (or PVP in MMOs), then the surround sound benefits are not so important. See madlustenvy's thread . . .- MtnSloth

New Oppo BDP-95
Quote: HDMI to the Onkyo performs as expected. In this configuration, the Oppo BDP-95's DAC is wasted as you are using the DAC in the Onkyo; and one may as well have bought the BDP-93. Emotiva XDA-1 24/192 Balanced DAC/Digital Preamp for $250 (clearance)
Quote: It is very much a clearance price . . . no returns unless you get a defective unit. While not an issue for me, do note that the XDA-1 is deeper than most AVRs, but otherwise stacks nicely with them. This may or may not be an issue for desktop/work bench use. It will look odd...- MtnSloth

Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes
Thank-you for all the responses. Much appreciated. There are some recordings where, with regular loud speakers, an effect smoothly tracks from the left to the right channel. Thanks for chiming in! I gather that Redline tragically lost one of their team, and that has knocked them off-stride. As to cost, these plug-ins are far less expensive than the hardware it would take to duplicate the effect, no?- MtnSloth

Best DAC in the $300 Price Range?
I can use the optical out on the Mac, and that supports up to 24/96kHz. As I've said before, the situation is not hopeless . . . just annoying. I only have a handful of albums that are 24/192kHz, and I have two other systems where I can play them. I have considered the Audiophilleo...- MtnSloth
