Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS Announcement Thread
I think you're spot on. I love my AWAS but my one complaint would be around the amount of bass. That said, with the right system matching, I find it perfectly acceptable. The real showstopper for me with the AWAS is the vocals though. I've not found a headphone to beat as yet. I highly...- elnero

The Closed-Back Headphone Thread (Plus Comparisons & Reviews)
Another headphone to think about is the Focal Radiance. I have one here that I've been very impressed with. Bass on the Radiance is definitely the star of the show, especially sub bass. It has an almost visceral quality to it and it's not just thump and rumble, it has very nice detail and...- elnero

GUSTARD DAC-R26 Balanced Decoder R2R+1Bit Dual Native Decoding Music Bridge
No, we didn't change any settings on the R26. I do agree that extended listening is also important but there a few things that I can decipher pretty quickly when trying gear. In this case the tonal and bass weight were quite a bit leaner which is the opposite direction I'd want to go with my...- elnero

GUSTARD DAC-R26 Balanced Decoder R2R+1Bit Dual Native Decoding Music Bridge
Last night I had the opportunity to spend some time at another local audiophiles home comparing the Gustard R26 and Pontus II. This was very fortuitous as these are the two main DAC’s that I’ve been interested in as an upgrade to my Ares II. His system is speaker based and I’ve not heard this...- elnero

GUSTARD DAC-R26 Balanced Decoder R2R+1Bit Dual Native Decoding Music Bridge
FWIW, I recently asked Aoshida about price matching Shenzhen sale price. They wouldn't but they did allude to Gustard having an approved Black Friday pricing. I have no idea how much though. It looks like I'm going to actually get to hear one of these and compare to a Pontus II on Thursday. :)- elnero

Thanks for this! I did get to hear a Pontus II very briefly but it was in a speaker system that I was unfamiliar with but it sounded very nice. Based on your post and the review you linked it sounds like the Pontus II may very well be the upgrade I'm looking for and may well be the sweet spot...- elnero

Thanks for posting the link to that review. I've been trying to find more detailed information on the differences between the Ares II and Pontus II so this was quite helpful. I'd be curious to hear your findings between the two as well is you're able to? Did you try the Supra LoRad on the Ares II?- elnero

DENAFRIPS 'ARES' R2R discrete ladder DAC - close up view
Thanks for the info. I just poked around on diyAudio and, according to post #2388 in the filter brewing thread, the dac2541 doesn't support custom filters yet. Thought I might give some a try on the dac2541 I have here but I guess not.- elnero

This is some great information. I've heard others talk about using custom filters on the Soekris DAC's but I never bothered to look into them. I'm curious, what custom filters do you prefer and where does one get them?- elnero

Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS Announcement Thread
I only tried the AWKT pads for a few minutes so not enough time to get any concrete impressions. I personally didn’t find them quite as comfortable as the AWAS pleather pads. Sound was maybe a touch brighter.- elnero
