Best classical recordings...ever!
I’m a big fan of Pollini’s recording of the Polonaises. -
Best classical recordings...ever!
Pretty much any recording by Hilary Hahn is worth checking out. -
Classical - Basic Library recommendations (big list)
Oh yeah, lots. I’m consistently astonished at the quality of recordings and performances from the last 10 years. I subscribe to Qobuz which has excellent classical music selection. Every Friday they drop a whole bunch of new releases and I discover at least one great recording every week, and... -
Best classical recordings...ever!
Check out the hirez Tokyo String Quartets recorded over the past 5 years. The SACD's are very, very good sounding. -
Vivaldi- suggestions?
I've probably got over 100 Vivaldi albums, this one is my favorite - Podger is outstanding, as is the sound quality. -
Classical - Basic Library recommendations (big list)
Agree with bigshot - Glass tries my patience more often than not. John Adams, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich are all much more interesting composers from the "minimalist" school. -
Scotch
Recently Lagavulin came out with a "Distillers Edition", which is double matured in sherry to finish it. It is one of the very great scotch whisky's of the last decade, IMO.- Tyson

Best classical recordings...ever!
I love Mackerras in everything he does, except Brahms. He's too even handed, to beautiful for Brahms. IMO, Brahms needs searing emotional intensity or he falls flat. For Brahms, check out Szell, Toscanini, Levine, and Dorati for the Symphonies. The Piano Concerto's are best served... -
Best classical recordings...ever!
If you love Beethoven, just wait till you start to get into Mahler :O -
Reference Quality Chopin?
I second the Rubinstein recs, he is perhaps the best interpreter of Chopin ever. But sound quality is good but not super great. Zimmerman is one of the few that equal Rubinstein and he has first rate sound, check it out: -
I like this music, please help
There's some music that I like, can you tell me what else I might like? Yeah, I'm lampooning you. Deal with it. -
Shostakovich Symphonies
I'm listening to the Rostropovich set for the first time today - I have to say I am quite enjoying it, which is very surprising after the rather lukewarm reviews I've read of it. I like that it's different than any other set I've heard. Where most go for manic (Rozhdestvensky or Kondrashin)... -
Looking for the "Best" recordings of the usual classical favorites.
Check the link in my sig. -
Yo Yo Ma "Bach Cello Suites" album
It's not so much Ma, as it is BACH :) You should check out Bach's masterpieces on other instruments too - the Goldberg Variations on harpsichord/piano (I think you'd like Perahia a lot), and the Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin (Rachel Podger is my first choice). Bach could convey the... -
Favorite Living Classical Composer
Ades is very good! I think Higdon edges him out, though, for me: -
Album recommendation of Chopin's Nocturne?
Quote: [Dr. Dre Voice] YEAH! [/Dr. Dre Voice] -
Album recommendation of Chopin's Nocturne?
Rubinstein, followed by Pires and Barenboim would be my rec's. -
Classical
Also, remember that classical is a bit different in format than jazz or rock/pop. Phrases tend to only repeat over long spans, and there's a lot of transitions between keys and motifs, so patience is required, as is listening to a piece several times before you might "get it". And for goodness...
