A few perennial favorites, mostly "early music" played on historical instruments, things I've not seen mentionned heretofore. A few are, sadly, out of print, but when has that stopped anyone ?:

Josquin Desprez, Missa Pange Lingua, Ensemble Organum, Ensemble Clément Janequin, Marcel Pérès, Harmonia Mundi

Claudio Monteverdi, L'Orfeo, Ensemble Elyma, Gabriel Garrido, K617

Henry Purcell, Fantasias for the Viols, Hesperion XX, Jordi Savall, Auvidis

Antoine Forqueray, Pièces de Viole avec la Basse Continue, Paolo Pandolfo, Glossa

François Couperin, Les Nations, Hesperion XX, Jordi Savall, Astrée Auvidis

J-S Bach, Great Organ Works, Gustav Leonhardt, Sony Vivarte

J-S Bach, The Well-Tempered Keyboard, Gustav Leonhardt, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi

Sylvius Leopold Weiss, Pièces de Luth, Hopkinson Smith, Astrée Auvidis

I prefer the recording below, but wanted an easy link to a portion of the work that you could preview.

I have put together on spotify a (huge) playlist containing all recordings of the big tyson list I could find there, plus a few middle-of-the-road replacements for the missing ones. Here is the url to the list
 http://open.spotify.com/user/1231388220/playlist/1rHT4oIROI9UKN5hPH8kD2
and the spotify URI
spotify:user:1231388220:playlist:1rHT4oIROI9UKN5hPH8kD2

It is a collaborative list so please feel free to add any missing recording as they become available. Some day I will find the courage to try to put together something similar to tyson's list,  but for opera...

Phillip Glass is a monotonous hack.

Agree with bigshot - Glass tries my patience more often than not.  John Adams, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich are all much more interesting composers from the "minimalist" school.

I'm a maximalist. Too much is never enough.

I like the Koyannisquatsi trilogy soundtracks, Dracula, and the Low Symphony. Agree with preference for Reich though.

I'd also put George Crumb, Kaija Saariaho, and Arvo Part on the list of essential contemporary composers.

Sibelius Symphonies - Maazel Vienna Philharmonic

Biber Violin Sonatas - Romanesca

Biber Mystery Sonatas - Andrew Manze

try this

it's a great cast of Mozart specialists, Keenlyside is a great vocal comedian as Papageno, and the two ladies are appropriately intense and lovely (respectively). Colin Davis direction is very conservative, but things are kept alive but what's happening on stage. The production has drawn some criticism - considered too dark for the subject matter. Personally I find it beautiful and well attuned to the music and story.
