How and why do members fall in love with second tier headphones?
More clearly stated, DSP is not limited to equalization, but equalization is most certainly a very useful form of DSP.- BlackbeardBen

Testing audiophile claims and myths
A good hardware ABX comparator is going to have a tape out/in function to allow a single input to the comparator looped out for processing and thus comparison with a pass-through. Right. But it seems there's still some confusion. Heck, you can even use an ABX comparator with speaker (or...- BlackbeardBen

Testing audiophile claims and myths
Note that in most cases with a single output from the original source (DSD in this case), you will need the PCM loop input and output both through the switch box. Essentially, like a tape loop. Actually, you could pretty easily use a receiver or preamp tape loop for a single blind test. Also...- BlackbeardBen

Testing audiophile claims and myths
You totally missed the point of my post. There is zero need for digital conversion to or from DSD to PCM to compare them via the method I proposed. You would take the analog output of the DSD DAC and run it into a comparator that can switch between a pass-through and a level matched PCM...- BlackbeardBen

How and why do members fall in love with second tier headphones?
Interesting to see more members post on their thoughts of what constitutes a "Tier" as far as headphones go.- BlackbeardBen

How and why do members fall in love with second tier headphones?
So, Redcarmoose, you've identified some of the headphones in each of your "Tiers" - but how did you come to that conclusion? There's obviously a strong correlation with price, but we all know that there isn't a direct relationship regarding price versus objective performance. Are you...- BlackbeardBen

Is It Really Worth 'Upgrading' Sennheiser HD 580/600/650 Cables?
In addition to a sturdier or more reliable cable (IMHO the HD 650 cable fixes that), a more portable cable for transportable use is most certainly a reason to upgrade. I'm thinking of doing it myself. -
Skeptico Saloon: An Objectivist Joint
Yes, it is cheatable. Fortunately, for one's own personal use that isn't a very important flaw. It would be relatively simple for a proctor to supervise its use in a formal test setting, though. But that does mean supervision, which is always more work than none.- BlackbeardBen

Skeptico Saloon: An Objectivist Joint
That's what double blind ABX testing in Foobar2000 (or a similar ABX generator) is for. There are tons of posted test results on the net, with all sorts of test parameters, if you want to read about tests others have done. Or, you can perform tests yourself, as many here (myself...- BlackbeardBen

Skeptico Saloon: An Objectivist Joint
A note here: Someone (who is long-term active on the forums) ought to reboot the Testing Audiophile Claims and Myths thread. Before that happens though, here's a question: Should it pick up from where the old one stopped without copying all of the old links, or should it include those as...- BlackbeardBen

The straight dope on 24 bit recordings.
Does that mean bait and switching them to a 1000 Hz square wave at 0 dB full scale, after getting them to put IEMs in and turn the volume all the way up?- BlackbeardBen

Skeptico Saloon: An Objectivist Joint
I had to check for myself, and it's true... How much is bail on bigshot's thumbs up button? Can we all pitch in to cover it? Or is it considered dangerous enough that there will be no bail?- BlackbeardBen

Testing audiophile claims and myths
I'll suggest that there is a practical way to ABX double blind test DSD versus PCM audio. At least, if one starts with the assumption that if DSD audio at sufficient sample rate is superior, and that a PCM ADC/DAC loop would degrade or otherwise affect the sound audibly. At least one...- BlackbeardBen

Does ripping from Vinyl get better sound than ripping CDs to lossless?
Thanks for the video link! That was perfect. Demonstrating the basics of digital signal theory in an easily digestible form, for those unfamiliar with (or more importantly, those with a misunderstanding of) the principles. In fact, it was just like a university lab exercise would work - I...- BlackbeardBen

[Impression] FiiO X3 – High Fi, Low Price.
Quote: James, I think what TJ Max was asking about is a "sleep mode" that will turn the player off after a certain amount of time. The X3 has this "sleep mode" aka "auto sleep" feature, which can be set from 15 to 60 minutes, according to ClieOS's review in the original post...- BlackbeardBen

Peer groups, self selection, the breadth of the audiophile community

Peer groups, self selection, the breadth of the audiophile community
To me it's more or less clear that reasonable discussion regarding actual scientific research is quite impossible here, if the discussion at all ends up straying towards the philosophy of science - which it almost inevitably does over time. This is quite frustrating, of course. I'm...- BlackbeardBen

Getting rid of ground loops: What is the best option?
Quote: No, my preamp is non-grounded. I see what you mean about the potential ground leakage problem. Yes, I know about the grounded screw on outlets without the ground pin. I'm plugging everything into a surge protector/power strip - but it never occurred to me to run a wire to...- BlackbeardBen

Getting rid of ground loops: What is the best option?
Quote: I'm not sure how I would ground the amps without using the existing electrical infrastructure (i.e. the wired ground), and to tap into that I'm either going to need to hack up an extension cord, make my own, or buy a commercially available product to do the same thing. It's...- BlackbeardBen

Getting rid of ground loops: What is the best option?
Okay, here's a related question for you guys: I have a pair of old mono tube amps with metal chassis that were serviced and a grounded cable added to them for safety purposes. But... I want to plug these in via the switched, non-grounded outlets on my pre-amp. The power switch for the amps...- BlackbeardBen

a research on ears health after continuous use of headphones? Experience?

What are the weaknesses of digital sound and why?

Is basic as good as uber expensive
Quote: Maybe some will call it heresy, but I listen to my HD 600 straight out of my Clip+ in bed... At low volumes there's absolutely no need for an amp in such a situation. Quote: That's part of the story but of course not all of it. For example, even if...- BlackbeardBen
