    Preamp or not?

Many folks will tell you that there is a loss of dynamics and slam to offset a gain in transparency. If you go with a passive, there are matching and cabling issues to deal with. Run a search on Audiogon. there has been much discussion on this issue. I can tell you that I just bought my pre from...

Granite Audio Aspen Tube Headphone Amp on Audiogon!

Well, someone has got one now . I snagged that auction and I am breaking it in now. Initial reaction is quite good- running OTL, it has a very nice rich sound with full, taut bass. the really interesting thing is that it is driving my K1Ks very nicely. Once its broken in, I will do a mini-review...

    EH 6SN7 Gold pin?

Well, if the EH gold pin is equal to the RCA Red base, it would make it pretty much the equal of the best 6SN7 ever. Sounds like marketing hype to me. YMMV.

Why shouldn't you plug/unplug cans/source while an amp is on?

Don't want to pick a fight, but it depends on the topology of the amp circuit and also the way the RCAs connect. Some amps, esp. tubes, should not ever be activated without a load (speaker, headphone, dummy resistor) across the outputs. Turning the volume down is useful if the way the jacks are...

    looking for an amplifier

Chickito- You are correct, a control amp is another term for a pre-amp, and if it has a phono input then it should be able to handle a MM or high output MC cart. YOu can use any power amp you like. You do NOT need an integrated amp, which is a power amp and pre-amp together.

    looking for an amplifier

Hate to say this, guy, but you are going to need a pre-amp w/ a phono stage and an amp, or an integrated with a phono stage, or a separate phono stage to feed a pre-amp or integrated. Signal from a tt is very small and needs RIAA equalization, before being pre-amplified and then amplified.

    Using different brand tubes...

Quote: It uses the following tubes: > 4 x 6CA7/EL34 (push-pull power stage) > 2 x 12AU7 (driver) > 1 x 6AQ8 (power amp input) > 4 x 12AX7 (preamp) Asterix- you would need to use a matched quad of the EL-34s. the 12AU7s should match since there is one in each channel only...

In-ear like HD650, does it exist?

I'd love a pair of earbuds that sound as good as my HD-650s. Blur Oniion- what is the basis of your tentative conclusion?

Hirsch- Did you do the hard-wiring on the K1K, or is there a commercial vendor available to do that?

Experienced audiophile that is new to headphone systems and needs some advice...

HI Al- I was in same boat, as well. Senn HD-650s w/Silver dragon cable is a good combo, IMO. I have a microzotl in one system and an Audivalve RKV MK2 in another. The micro is very nice with some good NOS tubes in it, but I think that the RKV would be better for rock. I think that the RKV has a...

help me not destroy my new amp- bias noob

    1) Does a load have to be connected to set bias? I would do it that way. 2) Does amp have to be warmed up to set bias? Bias will change as amp warms up. 3) Instructions say to use included plastic tool for bias adjustment (none in box). Metal screwdriver ok or not? If the screw is exposed...

    looking for practical high-end headphones

I have an M-Audio 24/96 card that I feed to a FPS flat panel/sub set-up, mostly for background listening from Sirius.com while working. Its pretty darn good, as far as I am concerned. You will DEFINATELY want an amp; as good a one as you can afford, IMO. The amps I own are more $$ than your...
