This player is apparently 'legendary' but now about 8 years old. Does anyone still have one and how does it stack up to modern beasts?

The Twinhead uses tube rectifiaction. It's another headphone amp to your list but as zzz said, the circuits vary greatly and you can't really compare amps based on this one design feature.

True, but it's easier to put together in kit form and looks reasonably good etc... If you're crazy I think there are also Silver Rock silver wire TVCs but the price on those is exciting to say the least.
