The Hyland Headphones Saturn One, Saturn Two and Jupiter One thread

I notice the cable has one red connector, one black connector. The convention is usually red for right, whatever's left is.....left.

Do I need to sand rhodium plating

It's not always necessary. It depends how hot your iron can get, rhodium is a bit harder to solder to, it needs a higher temperature and the solder won't wick as far so needs holding at temperature longer. But if the iron can't go high enough then it'll just blob and not flow.

    Hyland headphones

They're so light there's little weight on the head and a lot of the support comes from the large pads, so the headband isn't really noticeable.

No it's made from scratch. Grado inspired maybe. Some aspects remind me of Spirit too.

Need some quick help with soldering drivers without a diagram

Hi Viber, coloured dot is signal (+) side, non-coloured dot is ground side. Even if this particular headphone is 'the other way' it doesn't matter, so long as you do the same on both drivers, then they'll both be in phase. Solder the wires to the outer tabs only, the inner tabs are for the coil...

    BeyerDynamic owners unite...

The seal is important, I never got a good seal with the stock Beyer pads either. I use 70x80mm on-ear pads mounted via DIY 3D printed pad plates ( https://www.tinkercad.com/things/fyQmuWijsKW ). I use them a lot, maybe 3rd most used after the T70 and 770. They match the T70 for overall sound...

    The Headphone Driver Pics Thread

Beyer was the first thing I thought when I saw the diaphragm. Looks and feels well made. I'd stripped it down to check for hairs on the diaphragm, found two stuck under the outer rim, a bit of a trap for them. Very thick damping wad between the driver and the rear, open via holes in the back...

    Gain question

For headphones with different impedances. The low gain setting may not get loud enough with high impedance cans (100 ohms and up), the high gain setting may too easily distort with low impedance cans (32 ohms and down).

    Replacing optical port on DAC?

Hiya, yes, that looks OK, these are fairly standard. The Everlight part has some bumps on the bottom which may raise it a bit higher off the PCB, if it is too high with them then they can be shaved off. Check the PCB is OK, it's obviously had some force on it, those pins shouldn't come freely if...

    The Headphone Driver Pics Thread

I think the ZPY components are zener diodes, there should be a number on one side showing the breakdown voltage. With a reverse bias facing each direction they normally do nothing, until their breakdown voltage is reached, then they start to conduct and bypass the driver, clipping the output...

For the DT220 I 3D printed these pad plates that hold an 85mm round pad of choice and clip into the existing mounting holes. https://tinkercad.com/things/aqCGFayrjpW

    Orthodynamic Roundup

Thanks for the comments, yes it is Grado pads on the Elega, it looked good, but they definitely benefit from having the sound contained more so they're now back to pleather pads. They still sound of their time, but they're surprisingly recoverable with some eq, they've been fun to play with.

    Orthodynamic Roundup

I just modded my Akai ASE-40. Always preferred the sound when I covered the backs a bit so made some backplate inserts and added some extra material underneath. It extends the treble and lowers the mid-range, makes it sound more 80s, less 70s. The inserts are 3D printed and spray painted, I...

DIY Planar magnetic heapdhones in details

It must be the same as a regular dynamic, the impedance is in the same ball park, my Akai ASE-40 is 40ohms pushing a 40mm membrane, and it doesn't have a problem with volume.
