you can find ATH-M50's for $90 used on here just go to the for sale/trade section. i had a pair for my first good pair and loved them. best for the price in my opinion.

they certainly sound great for rock but he was looking for closed cans, i would highly recommend the shure 840's and the 380 pro's i liked them a fair amount for metal and rock, just my opinion 

I would agree that the m-100's have top of the line build quality but they are quite heavy, so I wouldn't recommend them for travel/around neck use... just my opinion, love the sound though
