Looking to possibly go for my first CIEM

I think I want a CIEM. Even though the HD800 is the most comfortable full-size headphone I've ever owned, the size and weight are starting to wear on me.  I also think the shape of my ear is different enough on each side that it is having an effect on how I perceive sound with large...

Looking for an amp that measures well and can power DT880's 600 ohm

I'm looking at a possible amp upgrade soon, but it's nearly impossible to wade through what's out there nowadays. Reviews seem to be mostly pictures of the box the thing came in or fluffy adjectives that don't really tell me anything.   Can you guys help me? My headphones are Beyer DT880s...

So here's my system right now: Oppo 980--->Monoprice IC's--->Darkvoice 336i--->Beyerdynamic DT880 600 ohm I'm probably going to be moving to a music server solution within the next year, so I'm looking to upgrade to a new amp/DAC combo. Here's what I'm looking for:   Features - Amp...

Did B&H send me the 250 Ohm DT 880 instead of the 600 Ohm?

So I ordered the 600 Ohm DT 880 from B&H. They arrived today. There are multiple stickers on the box that say "600 Ohm Audiophile Model", but on the back of the box it lists the impedance as 250 Ohm. Is this just the way these are packaged?

FINALLY going to upgrade from SR-80s, need some advice

Well, I just found out that I'm getting an extra $500 in scholarship money, so I'm gonna by some new headphones. So here's what my system looks like right now: Oppo 980----->Darkvoice 336i------>Grado SR-80s I'm probably going to stick with tube amps, probably the Darkvoice/Figaro...

Dr. Ebbetts has heard the Beatles remasters: He's retiring!

Well, there ya go. Quote: "Dear friends, I sincerely hope all is well with you and yours. Indeed, this is an unexpected mass-mailer. Please forgive the unsolicited rambles that follow. To start, there are many of you who have outstanding orders with me at this time. Some of...

Is there a good universal player in the $1,500 or less range?

I'm going to be upgrading from my Oppo 980 sometime soon, and my budget it around $1,500. I'd like a player capable of SACD/HDCD/DVDA while still having redbook playback comparable to CD-only players in its price range. Does such a player exist, or am I going to have to compromise on one of the...

Should I upgrade the CDP or just get a DAC for my Oppo?

Ok, here's my current setup: Oppo 980----->Monoprice IC----->Darkvoice 336i----->Grado SR-80s I plan on upgrading the SR-80s to a pair of Senn HD-650s, and will then upgrade the 336i to a 332 sometime in the future. Before upgrading my amp, though, I want to upgrade my source, and I have a...

Solti's Der Ring des Nibelungen, version differences?

It seems that Solti's Der Ring des Nibelungen was issued on CD twice, around 1990 and then in 1997. I've seen no indication that the sound between these two sets is different. Anyone compare?

Help me Build a Classical Collection through BMG (yourmusic)

I've been meaning to get into classical music for a long, long time. Everything that was regarded as good that I've heard I've enjoyed very much. The problem with classical, though, is that it can be a bit unwieldy to get into for a beginner. I'm now a member of the BMG Music club, though...

I just got a free Zune 30 GB: What do I do?

So, I got an old-style 30 GB Zune from Live Search Club. Now, I've had some experience with the Zune. I already know I like it. The problem, though, is that I don't really think 30 GB is enough space for me if I want to carry around my entire CD collection. I have about 800 CDs, and if I can get...

Upgrade from Grado SR-80s for my system

Well, it looks like I'm going to be upgrading my headphones in the near future. I currently have a pair of Grado SR-80s, and I like their very rockin' sound, but I wouldn't mind if they were a little more laid back, neutral, balanced, or whatever you want to call it. I listen to a lot of rock...

    Oppo 980 = Bassy?

I recently replaced my cheapo Mintek DVD player with an Oppo 980. My amp is a Darkvoice 336i w/ stock tubes and my headphones are Grado SR-80s. My initial impressions of the 980 are that it produces a more open, perhaps fuller sound, but it is somewhat muddy, especially during lower frequencies...

Should I bother upgrading my cables?

My setup is soon going to be Oppo 980-->Darkvoice 336i-->Grado SR-80s. I'm just going to be using standard RCA cable, so I'm looking at possibly upgrading them. My budget, though, is limited. I'm not really into the whole idea of spending even $50 on cables, especially since I could just upgrade...

    Delete please

I went ahead and bit on the Oppo 980 for $120. It's such a good price, I couldn't pass it up.

Yeah, anyone else picking it up? I've heard from "sources" that it's quite good.

    Tubes and powering on

I read in the tube FAQ that the greatest chance of failure for a tube is during powering on, and that it is recommended that the amp be left on sometimes in order to avoid this. Is this really much of an issue, though? I'm somewhat worried about creating so much heat with my Darkvoice, and the...

Just took the plunge on a Darkvoice 336i: what do I need to know?

I just paid for my Darkvoice 336i. It cost me $250, and seems like a great deal. It is, however, my first headphone amp, so my knowledge pertaining to these things is somewhat limited. As a new amp owner, what do I need to know? I'm talking about anything related to this amp or headphone amps...

Darkvoice 336i or Little Dot Micro Tube??

As some of you may have read in this thread, I plan on buying an Oppo 980 DVD player as a new source. Well, I obviously need an amp, and after looking at a number of option, I thought the Little Dot Micro Tube might be a good choice. I could get it used for around $150-$180, and the sound...

Something I've been wondering about SACD/DVDA and amps

If I take the RCA output from a SACD/DVDA player and hook those up to a headphone amp, will I be able to get the hi-res sound?

Good amp to match with Oppo 980 and Grado SR-80s?

I plan on buying an Oppo 980 sometime soon to replace by old source, as it seems like a great player for the price. Obviously, I'm going to need an amp to go with it. What I need: - Budget: around $150 for amp, cables, etc. - Headphones: Grado SR-80s - Would prefer if amp could power...

Well, my old source is dead.

I spilled some tea on my Kenwood UD-90 system, and now I need to find a new source. Here's the rundown of what I want: - Under $200 - Being able to play DVDA, SACD, and HDCD is a plus, but not required. - My Kenwood had a nice EQ, but then again I guess a quality source doesn't really need...

Notorious B.I.G.-Ready to Die Remaster vs. Original

A few years back, a remaster of Ready to Die was released. Does it sound better than the original, or is it just another compressed piece of doodie?
