I spent the 1990s chasing passive preamp perfection, but only came to the conclusion that passive seems 'flat' sounding and active (tubes or ss) give more dimensionality to the music. I listen about 50/50 ss/tubes on my Freya+.

Just hook it up if your speakers are sensitive enough...the Ragnarok 2 makes a very good preamp, and the Aegir is a more refined power amp than the Rag2.

That's the one I want to audition in my system; I'm just afraid I will buy it if I do! My speakers are 98.8db/2.83W and 4 ohm, so the single Aegir has plenty of power. I'm waiting on a Freya+, then I will continue to listen for a few months before I check out the XA-25.
