I see that there are a couple of DACs that connect to the iPhone (Algorythm Solo and HRT iStreamer). This tells me that the digital information is available at the iPhone connector. I already have a portable DAC, so I was wondering whether anyone is manufacturing an iPhone > DAC connector...

Do FLAC and Apple lossless have the same functionality in terms of number and types of tags they can contain, and whether an image can be embedded in the files?

If there is an pre-amp or integrated amplifier out there with a phono input and a decent headphone output, then that would get you going. How about the Rogue Audio Metis preamplifier or Cronus integrated amplifier?

When I tried the Novo using my AKG K501s, K701s and Beyer DT880s, and compared it to my Darkvoice 332 and my Headamp GS-1 I was really tempted to buy one because I enjoyed the resolution of treble detail so that I could hear singers breathing, scraping of strings, etc. I didn't notice any hiss.

Gain is simply the ratio of the output voltage divided by the input voltage, and doesn't say anything about impedance or power delivery. It is usually expressed in decibels.
