No, the Nirvana is transformer coupled. It outputs a whooping 6.5 watt into all impedances (setting from 32 to 600 ohms). I have it and it pairs amazingly well with the VC, as well as my other dynamic and planar headphones. It’s quiet, powerful, and outstanding overall.
I absolutely love it. I followed the head-fi thread for Nirvana for awhile as I made my decision. Lots of great input and know-how there on this product. I am very, very happy with it.
You're so right. Good things come to those who wait, right? with the VC last year (which took several months); and the DNA this year (which took twice as long) -- Both so worth it in the end.
Appreciate that. It took me a couple of years to find the money for my Leopardwood VC's. Had my Auteurs for a couple and knew I had to have the VC's. Well thanks to stimulus money my system has vastly improved. Better cables, all Wywires and A JCat USB XE and new freebie software to reduce memory jitter in my computer. Minority Clean, recently changed name to Majiority clean, my system sounds worlds better than it did at this time last year. And within a month or so I will have Lordgwynn's Airmid Triode OTL running my VC's. Pretty amazing how it has all occured. Make's being an audiophile totally worthwhile!
Looking for an adapter recommendation...I have a couple of nice pentacon cables I use with my Hifiman Arya that id like to use with the VC. I guess I would be looking for a 3.5mm female to mini xlr female adapter, but I'm not seeing a whole lot of options out there except one that is Amazon.

For custom adapters without spending a fortune you might check out Etsy. There are a few shops that can build whatever you request as long as they have (or can get) parts. I had custom adapter (right angle 1/4 to XLR) made from Patrick at FogCityAudio and have nothing but positive things to say: https://etsy.me/2SeMX32
Well-constructed to my specifications with quality components and shipped in less than 24 hours.
Zach has commented multiple times that it would be best to make your decisions based on the look and weight (for comfort) of the wood vs any sound differences there might be between the wood types as they're essentially negligible.
For any other sound tweaking on the HP itself, pads would be the way to go.
However I thought that if I could find one headphone that was very musical and fun to listen to, and not analytical or clinical at all, where I’m not thinking about does this sound right or does that sound right, then I would look for another pair of headphones.
Well I joined the family. Just bought a VC in Sapele. Less than 5 hours on it and so I get to break it in. It also came with WyWires Platinum cable but I'll see if they will re-terminate it as I need 4 pin XLR.

Nice. Don't be thrown off if they sound weird at first. Stock Auteur Lambskin pads have magic and a little weirdness in them. Get settled in. Nit pick things you don't like and pad roll a bit. Happy listening !

200 hrs is what ZMF recommends. I don’t know if it’s the dynamic drivers or my brains, but after that time certainly I felt the difference. I did leave them several overnights with pink noise at moderate volume to get some faster mileage..
