I sold my Vsonics last week and didn't listen to them for about 3 weeks previous, but from what I can recall they share similarities -
Again, the bass on the Yamaha's is noticeably more forward and dominant in the overall sound signature, but saying that I wouldn't call it overpowering - I much prefer the thud and roll of the bass on the Yamaha's, the GR07's bass when very deep but it was never anything that made me smile about the Vsonics (more the detail and soundstage)- Whereas on these it does.
The bass was tighter on the GR07's but I notice a considerable difference on the Yamaha's from my desktop rig and my portable rig un amped. They are still very quick across the board and the bass is separated very well.
Mid wise I would say they're very similar, I'm impressed with these as I was the GR07's, I'm not a massive mid range fan (I don't base my choice on midrange proficiency) - But I'd say that's where the performance similarity lies between the two.
I quite like a laid back sound that's enjoyable whilst staying casual, not something that fatigues you after an hour, although I'd say the Vsonics didn't fatigue me, I couldn't listen to them for 4 hours like the Yamaha's or the Tandems. Technically I'd still say after 250+ hours the GR07's were ahead of the Yamaha's and Tandems, but now after nearly 300 on my Tandems, they're starting to win me over - I'm hoping the Yamaha's just improve. I mean it could just be a massive placebo and also probably just lies on your ears getting used to the sound, but I for one can notice a considerable change.
The sound of the Vsonics to me was boring and dry at first, but once you have listened to them for a week or so and got those hours on them, that's when they'll really grow on you - You'll either love them or hate them, but I was nowhere near as impressed with the GR07 as I am with the EPH100 straight out of the box.
If you're in the UK and can get them from Audio affair for the price of £79 they're a steal, the build quality, looks, design and fit wins over the GR07 for me alone - but then again, I was in search for a fun relaxed universal I have my Miracles for pure performance and neutrality, which is why the Vsonics just gathered dust - personal preference, I don't think you'll be disappointed with either -
Just do what I do and get both if you can spare, then sell/return the ones you don't like as much - No doubt my ears hear different to others so it's all based on the individual
Essay over, sorry.
