The Mullard you want is a Metal Base GZ34 ($$$), or go for the newer ones like the Elrog 5U4G, EML 5U4G, or the Takatsuki 274B (for clean and fresh music). There's a Brimar 5U4GY affectionately known as "Chernobyl" you can find on eBay for around $40 shipped, that one is a super hot runner, but sounds fantastic!
appreciate the detailed reply! I'm pretty satisfied with the amp, so I guess I'll reallocate the budget to rectifiers. I should be satisfied with the 596 but what's one more to mix it up? Seeing some pricier 5U4GY on ebay, maybe word got out but I'll keep an eye out

just picked up a wa6-se 2nd gen with a USAF 596 rectifier and swapped in some sylvania 13FD7s and have been absolutely loving it. i see a Mullard CV593 in the classifieds right now, does anyone know if it would be complementary to the 596 or i should look elsewhere for an alternative rectifier?
The Mullard CV593 is very good rectifier. i use it in both of my Woo WA 22 and WA 6-SE ( sold). Try this link, it is very helpful.

Sorry, fat-fingered my post. I meant the Brimar 5Z4GY, seen here:

it's a great resource, making my way through it. one guy really hyping up the psvane we274b replicas has my interest piqued
I'd get 5R4GY CV717. Buttery smooth factor is up there with the best. Mullard 5V4G is nice in every way overall, a safe bet. Both are $100 range + shipping NOS.

I'd definitely invest in $70 Woo adapters 13EM7 - 13DE7. Drivers are cheap. Nothing roars quite like the 13EM7 so far. I do use 13FD7 and 13DE7 with certain rectifiers and they are softer. I use 13EM7 the most. Drivers effect all aspects of sound including the sound staging.

oh yeah I think I'll try to find a 5R4GY CV717 to go with my brighter audio technica adx-5000. is there one with specific base i should be looking for? sorry I'm still a bit green in the tube world and all the different years, bases, rebrandings can be a bit murky

At that price I'll bite, let's see what this chernobyl is about. it's getting colder out and I can use the extra heat. Pleasantly surprised at how good the hifiman he6sev2 is sounding on the wa6-se, not that I had anything super powerful to drive em but still. Haven't even added it to the main set-up with the bifrost 2/rme adi-2, just messing around with line out from my dap or ifi gryphon.

Heres a pic of some tubes. Top row is my favorite drivers. Bottom row is my rectifiers so far. The 5 rectifiers on the left are my favorites for sure, they are all warm. I don't use the Woo stocker (Too boring compared to the others) or JJGZ34 (not enough resolution).

GEC U52 D Getter, 5R4GY CV717, 1950's Mullard Fat Black Base GZ34 (not same as metal GZ34), Mullard 5V4G, Brimar 5V4G(5V4GY), Sophia Princes 274B, RCA 5U4G, Woo Stocker, JJGZ34

A word of caution - I nicknamed it "Chernobyl" because it burns HOT - like actually puts off heat 2' away from it hot. Like, tell the kiddos it's a stove hot.

I went on quite a kick with that tube for a while. Very warm and smooth. It is a tube I know I will always be relaxed, it has a nice airiness and the extra warm is special.

It was one of my top 3 rectifiers, behind the USAF "Mighty" 596 and the EML 5U4G....until I got the Elrog 5U4G.... :)

5V4GY was my favorite for sure at one point. After I got my U52 it changed things though. Just adds resolution and is very tight/clean. Still musical and warm. So good. I have a D getter and I want to try a Cup getter.

Hi there, I just got a WA 6 SE Gen 1 and I’m seeing that it takes 6DE7. But the compatibility list on on Woo’s website only lists 13DE7 and other 13 series tubes. Is there a way to find the compatibility sheet specific to the Gen 1?

I’m particularly interested on if I can roll 6SN7’s in the Gen 1 SE or if that’s only for the base WA6.
