It’s a pretty dramatic difference, especially when you realize that you can make changes to your sound with each of the sets of tubes.
I have inky black background with all sorts of power, and the versatility with tube rolling is the most enjoyable part of it. The WA6-SE is good, but limited in how the sound can be changed. The WA5-LE is so very versatile it’s like having multiple amps.
For example:
If you want a warm, lush, “typical” 300B sound, use Western Electric 300B, RCA “Grey Glass” 6SN7’s, and some USAF “Mighty” 596 rectifiers.
If you want light and airy, throw in Takatsuki 274B rectifiers and 300B power tubes, and some Sylvania 7N7 or 6F8G drivers.
If power and analytical is what you’re after, it’s Elrog 5U4G rectifiers, Elrog 300B-amp power tubes, and Mel’s 1578 drivers.
Romantic and robust? Emission Labs 5U4G + 300B (bonus points for 300B Mesh) and Tung Sol 6F8G….
Then we can get into high and low power, H/L level and H/L impedance settings. But that’s another story.
