Why the Beats Hate?

Interesting to hear they're better than Solo 2s...always heard they were wonky and not as good as the Solo 2s. Will take a listen next time I'm in a store. Is there a way to listen in 'passive' mode or is NC always on?

FWIW, I picked up a set of Solo 2s for $79.99 at Best Buy. TBH, they were a good value for $79. Ended up giving them to my son and he likes them. That said, even at that price, I have several sets of cans that I've picked up in the past few years that are much better values to my ears:

V-Moda M80 for $40
Onkyo FC300 for $40
Grado SR60 for $80
Yamaha HPH-200 for $80
Senn Amperiors for $93
AKG 545 for $99

Cans that the Studio 2's would be competing against in my world...

Senn HD558 got for $119 but go for $80-100 now
Beyer DT770 for $140
AKG Q701 for $145
Beyer DT990 for $149
Denon D600 for $150

Soon...Senn HD6XX for $199 (drops mike)

Yes when you take portability out of the equation then you have a wonderful world of headphones to enjoy. No real need to spend much more than £100-£150, Yoe are 90% of the way to audiophilia nirvana. On a completely different plane to the likes of Beats

Beyerdynamic in particular is where the values at.

Ps those Amperiors were some bargsin

You've picked up some bargains there bro. New or second hand? I also bought the Solo 2 and tried it out before giving it to my daughter. Nice little headphone. More comfortable than the VMODA M-80. Now the D600 is one comfortable can with it's lush pads. Looks a bit weird though.

Maybe not as good but beyer DT860 at £50 was pretty good !

And in the days of play.com (UK) when they used to give away headphones away on a daily basis the then highly rated Goldring DR150 (HD595 beater) at £29.98 normally around £80 or more at the time.

All new except the Amperiors were factory refurbs with full warranty and the Q701's were 'like new' used from AWD. The Denon's are my go-to 'Basshead' can (even though I have SZ2000s...hit hard but mid & highs -- meh!)

Yep...Beyer's are often great values! Forgot to list my DT660's for $79.99

Beats Headphones for $200? No. Buy these instead: Sennheiser x Massdrop HD6XX - Head-Fi TV

Yeah they sound great but they're open and leak/don't isolate. Aren't most if not all Beats headphones closed?

Yeah but Beats Studio 1.0 leaks horribly.

Also sonys MDR-Z7 leak outside noise BUUT the sound awesome, ginormous soundstaging and great sounding inner resolution and overall details, plus cups and head-band structure made of magnesium.

ohh did i mention detachable cables and BALANCED capable? i bet beats aren't balanced capable nor have detacheable cabler plus they're cheap plastics esp i've seen videos of beats headbands snapping

Beats cables are all detachable and non-proprietary. No real need for a balanced cable with Beats because of low power requirements, but they are balanced capable.

Ignoring the subjectivity of how good their sound is, why the beats hate: because they spend a lot on marketing. Why do people think Hifiman headphones are good? Word of mouth through the audiophile community. I have never seen an ad for Hifiman or Audeze or Audio Technica or Focal. These companies rely on word of mouth, audiophiles liking their products and recommending them. When someone is eager to buy Beats, not only do audiophiles think about all the marketing for that brand that is included in the cost of headphones, but audiophiles think oh, look, someone who is more interesting in what an ad says about headphones than what enthusiasts say about headphones.

I don't think HiFiMAN is a particularly good example...
They're usually associated with good sound, but usually followed by "fragile earphones" and "cheaply build headphones".
Audeze isn't that great on build too, though I'm not sure with the newer series.
Audio-Technica is driven by the M50 meme.

Sennheiser is pretty big on marketing on the past few years as well. But since 2009, they haven't release an exciting product that is relevant to enthusiasts... the $300 to $500 segment.
The Momentum and Urbanite lines were desperate attempts to take a piece of the Beats market.

The Momentums were pretty fair headphones though.

Of course. Never said they were bad. I liked the original over ears, but I felt that they were more of a home headphone than an outside, portable headphone due to its mellow sound.

The one thing I couldn't get over about the original Momentums was their size. They felt like an uncomfortable hybrid of on-ear headphones and almost-over ear headphones
