Why do earphone cables go out?

you are alternating between just over and then twisting your wrist to make a loop going the other way. Just over over puts only strain on the outside of the cables and thus has more risks or wire failure. Over under distributes pressure on the wire between the outside and the inside of the wire to hopefully extend its life. Tech guys do this type of cable rolling also for its ability for quick unroll. With the over under wrapped wire, you can just through it and it will just unwind unlike knotting up.

This is the clearest video of how to do it in my opinion.
