Finally think it's time I found out what the Grado sound is like. I've been using a little PA2V2 amp that has given good results with Koss Porta-Pro's and my old iPod. Have also been satisfied with the Koss's directly into a BlackBerry playing Slacker.

Don't know to go with the 60i that is good straight out of players or the 80i that really needs an amp to sound it's best (so I've heard). There is also a strong likelihood they will be used with a Little Dot I+ and iPod or BB.

60i or 80i don't really need to be the amped.  I prefer the 60i, the jump from 60i-80i isn't really worth the few extra dollars, imo.

You'll hear differing opinions but I believe the SR-80i is worth the small premium over the 60i. I've always thought the 80i as one of, if not the, best value in an open headphone under $100. YMMV

I've only heard the SR-125s, but I've read that the 60is have the most bass out of all the Grados. I agree with tribestros in saying neither of them need to be amped.

baka1969, what do you feel 80 brings to the table that elevates it? $20 added expense is reasonable."

I just felt the stock SR-80i is slightly more refined and extended over the stock 60i. Both are fine out of an iPod and both benefit from being amped.
