I think there was a thread on this sometime ago. Senn makes some of their higher end stuff in Germany as well as Ireland.

You're right about the HD420's, they are made in Germany as you stated, I most recently received a parts pair of them for my restoration project, on eBay for only $15.00 USD (for the headband and the cord, as one of the elements was blown) and the headband does state "Made In Germany", so I know I got the absolute best when it came to Sennheisers from the 1980s.

BTW, what was the MSRP on them back in the 1980s?

I would bet that most if not all Senns made in the '80s and early '90s where made in Germany. That was before outsourcing to other countries became a big thing.

I don't know what the MSRP on your HD420s was. I'm wondering what my HD480s went for back when and where they stood in the Senn line-up.

You are right, I mean 'Foster', but not in Japan. I actually do mean that they have a (and only one to my knowledge) manufacturing plant in China doing 100% exporting business. It is in 广州市番禺, or Guangzhou Shi(city) Pan Yu Qu(area). Linky. -> this is a well kept secret, and I found it (a report of headphone OEM business in China) when digging around the web. Beside the plant, Foster also have at least 2 other companies in China under the Foster trademark.

That plant basically used for OEM'ing most of the Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Sennheiser, Aiwa, and Audio Technica earbuds/clip-on/big cans, and surprise, surprise, B&O A8 too. Ever wonder why the later stock ibud sounds better than its predecessor? Well, it is because it is OEM'ed in this plant using the same series of dynamic transducer used in Sennheiser MX400/500 series (and tweaked for Apple). BTW, want to know where those Made-in-China Sony E888 came from? Yes, it is from that plant.

Although I am not sure which (/all the) brands/models are manufactured in this plant, it is said that the majority of them do get shipped back to Japan for final packaging and the stamp of 'Made in Japan' - that includes some very high end of Audio Technica and Sony (and who-know-which-brand/model).

A) You forgot a big one. All Denon headphones are likely made in that plant.
B) Where do you draw your conclusions from? Why do you think all of these brands are OEM foster? (for at least the low end)
C) Do you have any sources to verify your claims? Or are you partly talking out of your ass? (aka. intuition).

I would not be surprised that the majority of headphones from these brands are made in china.. but the idea that they are all from one plant or even one company would surprise me.
