Hmmm...I haven't heard that many headphones, but I really like my HD565, and it seems the other people who own them do as well, but reviews are hard to come by.
The Beyer DT231's are quite nice, too. Especially considering the price.
(The Senn HD 565 was discontinued, unfortunately, and no new ones remain to be found. I tried, quite hard, and unsuccessfully, to find a pair. Too bad they replaced them with something much worse by all accounts.)
Denon 950s. Sure it's my only pair besides Koss but everyone goes for/recommends V6s just because they're as common as cockroaches. Somehow I don't see people flocking to own cockroaches though.
The V600s, now, that might be common as cockroaches
(myself, I haven't seen a single V600 or V6 on the streets. Just a V300, once. And I think back when I was wearing the Aiwa HP-X225 I was wearing the largest headphone on the streets in Hong Kong!
)

JML,
that's the link to my old Audio Technica headphone allright. But, as Babel Fish puts it: "It produced completed."
I bet there are some more sonic treasures buried in the Audio Technica range, but the only AT headphones I have ever listened to are the ATH-A5, the ATH-W10VTG (which probably hadn't had any break-in), the ATH-M40 (a small studio monitor) and the ATH-W100.
By the way, the Senn HD565 sounded very smooth to me - for a Sennheiser headphone. I liked it.
HD565 for me also. I used to have them and they were very nice. Only sold them after getting the 600s.
From the cheapies I think Philips HP 550 gets my vote.
I've been tempted to sell my HD565 before when money was tight, but I never could quite get myself to do so - I'm quite attached to them after 2 years (and I don't even have a proper headphone amp to drive them!). They are very smooth headphones - laid back but quite neutral and revealing, but not analytical, at least to my ears. I let my brother listen to them and compare them to his AHD950s (which I use all the time now anyway) running off an Onkyo stereo receiver (with a nice headphone jack), and he finally admitted that they were clearly better than the Denon's (he'd only previously compared them out of a pdcp). Denon's might have comparable detail, but they lack the refinement and clarity of the Senns. Now if only I could run the 565 out of my pdcp and get comparable results.
One of these days I'm going to get myself an amp...I swear!
