You can always pm JMT for an Altoids amp.

Honestly, the only way I could afford an amp right now is if I paid with a credit card.

I picked up a pair of Sony MDR-55's a few years back, and they've proved to be about the only pair of 'department store' headphones I've ever been satisfied with.

They were about twenty bucks. They're lightweight, have a single-side cord that's light without being 'cheap', extending ten feet to a screw-on 1/4 inch adapter.
They're an open-air design - while they don't have enough bass to please too many folks, the clarity is a heck of a lot better than the 'it came with the walkman' phones.

I use 'em mostly for ham radio and shortwave listening. When the earpads wore out, I replaced 'em with the RatShack generic replacements - and was happy to find that the sound quality and comfort were both improved!

Don't get me wrong - these aren't going to blow anyone's $100+ 'phones out of the water, but for $20, I'm happy to have 'em in my stable of headphones.

C'mon, someone, show me some support here!

They wouldn't be underrated if you got any support, now would they?

Well, just to prove a point, the AKG-K501's are so underrated that no one else has mentioned them yet, so I will.

The K501's get my vote.
