Westone ES5
Jan 23, 2011 at 5:58 PM Post #931 of 5,554

Ok guys, an update from Westone for anyone who's interested why the right side of my ES5 failed.

Apparently the monitor stopped working due to a wire coming loose in the earpiece. It had since been re-soldered back and issue cleared.

I'm happy with their explanation and the case is now closed for me.

Same thing apparently happened with mine (right side as well).

Woooooo... I've finally read all 63 pages after 3 days of on-off viewing :D

I have a few questions.

I'm based in London, so Hand Held Audio seem to be the quickest place to go if I want to buy these. They do impressions as well as supply the ES5.

However, when I called them the woman who answered had no idea what the ES5 were and told me that 5 drivers we not possible!!!!

What is this about? I thought these guys are supposed to be the best in my area?

Secondly, is it possible to get a different colour per side. I was thinking R in Merlot and L in Smoke?

Other than that and finding the cash to afford them - I'm set on these!

Hand Held Audio don't seem to have the ES5 listed on their site.  And they sell the JH16pro with 8 drivers so I don't know what they were telling you about 5 not being possible.

I know for a fact that "themp3company.co.uk" stock them and that once you order they will contact you for colour choice etc.  The only problem then would be finding somewhere to take impressions as they will only advise you of Audiologists in your area.

Thanks. To be honest, the woman I spoke to could have just been a receptionist. I hope she was just that!

HHA can do impressions and complete the order which is why they are the most appealing. I prefer visiting an actual dealer rather than online contact to begin with. Especially at that price.

It's either the ES5 or W4's, RWA iMod and Portable Amp.

Money. Money. Money.

I think you need to speak to someone who knows what they're talking about at HHA ... I'm pretty certain the woman you spoke to is wrong.

Someone from the UK already posted pictures of their ES5 which they purchased from HHA. They cost him £950 inclusive. You can see pictures of them on page 58 of this thhread.

themp3company.co.uk sell the ES5 for £1000 but I'm not sure if that is inclusive of ear impressions and custom artwork.

I very much doubt there would be any problem getting them made in different colours for each ear.

Forgive a noob for posting this. I really can't go through 60 pages >_<

Would using a whiplash elite twag cable with the ES5 for my Samsung M1 without amp make a noticeable difference?

& I hear that
  1. Since I can't use LO with my Samsung M1, I can't bypass my internal dac so I don't need the stepdance.
1a. ES5 is easy to drive so I don't necessarily need an amp for ES5 with #1 in consideration.

Do you agree on the above?

That's what I mean - I know she was wrong and also know that Nick is the man to talk to at HHA but it leaves you wondering when a member of staff at a company dealing is specialist audio doesn't know what the company supply!

I just want some feedback on what people think of HHA.

Thanks though.

I haven't heard the Samsung M1, but I can say that the ES5 don't need an amp to drive them.  But the better your source and amp then the better the ES5 will sound.  The source does make a difference, and using my HM-801 or HM-602 player with or without an amp is better than my iPhone with an amp.  I would focus on getting the best source and amp you can afford, before spending the money on a cable.  The cable makes a small improvement, but I tend to make cables my last upgrade.  In my case the HM-602 and 801 have a nice amp already built into them.

I see. Thank you for your help. I don't think I'm going to be upgrading my source any time soon because I have a limited budget. I'll hang with regular cables and DNSe 3.0 with the M1 >.< till I save enough to get a source with LO :p

Are the mids on the Westone ES5 really pronounced? Or are they around the same level of "spotlight" as the highs and lows?

Also, is the bass on the Westone ES5 more punchy than the JH13?

There seems to be some debate about a high end sparkle on the ES5. Is there such a thing, or is there no sparkle?

I would appreciate it if someone could answer these questions for me. Thanks!

For me the mids are very musically and naturally presented, but technically is slightly ( 1db ) ahead of the bass and treble.

The bass on the ES5 is more punchy than the JH13 Pro's, but aren't as pronounced as the JH13 Pro in the sub-bass area.

The ES5's for me has a very nice sparkle that doesn't fatigue the ear one bit.

Very good description - agreed.

As do I. The treble is sweet, not excessively bright, shrill or fatiguing.
