USB-C to 3.5mm adapters (DAC) - Let's find the best

PS: Power consumption of Ztella is pretty high and it gets also pretty warm.

PS2: Control buttons on my headsets did not work with ztella. MQA did not work with my (unrooted) Meizu 16th

I didn't notice a high power consumption here and the Ztella hardly gets luke warm, mostly playing MQA. The control buttons work fine as well, even with my laptop.

Now owning a couple of portable dacs
They are in some sense the same as headphones and iem, they all have their own sound and imperfections.

Not all headphones/ iem shine on the same dac, and some headphones shine in particular music in one dac and acebother music on a other dac.

Let's start with the Fiio m5
This little machine can drive most iem's and not to demanding full size cans. They work ok with my X2hr and hd599 but on max the HE4xx is still not really loud.

Sound wise the m5 is nothing to write home about, it's not really layerd and doesn't have a great sound stage. Dynamics are also far from ideal. They sound is not really changed in terms of soundsignature. Little down side is a hiss in silent parts on sensitive iems. But even on the vl-03 I can hear it.

The big plus on the m5 is you can use it in many ways. Can be a piggy tail dac amp, can be used as USB reciever or sender. Got its own little battery and works as flac player (sd card required). The volume rocker is also a great thing speaking for the m5

The meizu HiFi dac (non pro)
This little and I mean little dac is kind of impressive. Sounds a little cleaner than the fiio m5 and has no noticable hiss at all.

They can drive almost all I have got, noted that the HE4xx klcant get to mind blowing volume but it's enough to listen to.

Sound wise this little machine is more detailed and has a little larger sound stage and seperation compaired to the fiio m5. The sound is also even more natural but to boring in my perspective. (9038s is the most natural but because of the large sound stage seperation and imaging way more exciting to listen too.

Little side note on my 1+7 pro the Meizu stotters in UAPP and connected to fiio m5. In Al other cases it's fine.15786588471056548450504662465496.jpg

The Ibassio dc01
This is my absolute favorite, not because it's the best over all but does the things I like right.
The dc01 got dubble the power of the Meizu and m5 and can power all no problem. It does like some juice tho and will drain your battery quicker.

Sound is warm and some what dark, specially combined with the bl-03 or even the Tin T2.
Seperation, soundstage and imaging is really nice and beats meizu and m5 by far. On the dynamic part it's a little Les good but still better than m5 and Meizu. And that bass wow live it so much on the dc01 all music sounds alive with mind knowing oempfff.

The dc01 has verry little hiss but their is some there which presents it self while switching tracks. But it is little and less than on m5. Also the thing can go verry loud and there is no hardware volume controll to prevent this, be careful!!!

The E1da 9038s

This thing is like a V8, zipos power like no other and can go louder than any other you want to blow up your ears or iem's, Yes you can!
Need something to warm your hands while listening to music, you for it 9038s wil do this for you like a really good friend.

Sound wise this is the most potent dac I have listened to. Detail, layering, seperation soundstage depth and with, dynamics all are Superior on the 9038s. Sound has no color and the thing is like a surgeon knife. Very nice for analytical listening.

When you put up the volume for example on a Tin p1 there is a hiss that increases with the volume (hardware volume control?) But for the amount of power it got I think it's not designed for iem's so we will forgive the hiss.

P.s the hiss was a feature in the music, the dc01 did not pick up the hiss the 9038s did. But with other recordings the 9038 is dead silent.

Real downside is no hardware buttons for volume control as this thing can go loud by mistake way to easly. Also in UAPP on my phone the volume control does not work need to fiddle with this.15786598169094928954695898740908.jpg

-For my blon bl-03 i like the dc01 and 9038s best
-For the thin p1 i like the dc01 best but the 9038s is also amazing.
-The monolith m300 is best with the 9038s that combo is amazing. M300 with 9038s far surpasses any other iem I have heard period.
- the Ikkio oh1 suprised me on the 9038s.

To fix stutter in UAPP on your Meizu, disable bit perfect and go to settings, USB audio, Upsample, and choose on.
Software volume control for the 9038S only works when you have it enabled in UAPP. Go to settings, volume, USB volume control and set it to Software volume control

The hiss on my 9038s stays constant no matter which volume, device, OS, or application I'm on.

However, YouTube on Android at low volume sounds abysmal because Android's resampler and Mixer is dodo. Spotify is super clean curiously.

Thnx upsample I won't use but fixing 9038s volume would be stellar.

For me hiss increases with volume on the 9038s

What is your phone/source for the 9038s? On my Asus RoG Phone 2 there is no hiss even with sensitive iems.

It is probably the source in my opinion. Or your 9038s is faulty.

I also guess it's your source Sebastiaan. Mine is my PC or my 6T.
Tried with 1+7 pro, fiio m5 and PC.
Flac files and spotify

On the pc you guys can try out FiiO's new usb cleaning product. And tell us ifbit is bull or works. Haha

https://www.head-fi.org/threads/fii...ow-be-isolated-from-noise-on-the-road.922441/

Noise aside. Ironically a fully functional dap like the Hiby R6 Pro works best with these usb products since the have taken advantage of the ability to reroute bitperfect to their usb.
I tought bitperfect was a software issue only.
UAPP has a bitperfect option. Is it different?
Im interested to know if a DAP can do usb audio out better and how.

For me hiss increases with volume on the 9038s
Maybe the cable is faulty? Or the air in your home is extremely dry and you gather all the statics... I had that issue with iems in Dutch appartment in winter.

Ok, after 36 days of waiting, I finally got my Meizu DAC Pro today and WOW.. compared to my HTC U11 DAC, soundstage is wider, cleaner sound, deeper bass, stereo is nicely balanced. I wouldn't say it sounds louder than HTC's DAC but it's surely a really nice improvement. No beeps, pops, hissing or cutouts. It gets hot after one minute usage though, and it drains battery considerably faster than HTC's DAC. All my FLACs are in 16-bit 44.1 KHz and I'm using PowerAmp music player. I tried Neutron player but got same results.
One bad thing compared to HTC's DAC. The microphone's internal wire of my headphone broke many months ago but left/right audio works fine (I just can't answer calls and pause/play with headphone). With the HTC DAC, headphones work perfectly fine for audio, but Meizu DAC Pro doesn't. It plays a song for about 3 seconds, then I hear a 2 seconds buzzing, then Meizu DAC goes mute, no more sound from it. Then, headphone gets disconnected/re-connected on its own. It keeps re-connecting until I remove the Meizu DAC from the USB. I tried other 2 different headphones with no faulty wires and they worked fine. I guess Meizu DAC is ultra-sensitive on that front.
I tried my headphones with a P3 to P2 cable connected to the DAC and it worked fine with the Meizu DAC! I think it's safe to say the DAC is not malfunctioning, but it definitely doesn't like faulty wires. If only there was a way to disable "answer calls with the headphone" in Android 9...
My HTC U11 have Android 9 and I have the "HTC Audio Jack Adapter ToolKit" installed, or HTC DAC doesn't work at all.
I guess I'm gonna have to buy another headphone or just use a P3 to P2 small adapter (if I can find one!) :frowning2:

Look for "3.5mm headphone microphone splitter". You can find really short ones like this:
AV46C5s.jpg

Now just snip off the microphone end et voilà!

Furthermore, I highly recommend you try UAPP. It gave me a noticeable boost in SQ over Poweramp. If you do, don't forget to disable software volume and enable hardware volume. Bit perfect is also nice.

Ah it's a Dutch problem ;) and it's kinda winter. Mabey it's my beard.

Tried different cables, different iem, might be that it's in the recording and it's a feature that the 9038s can pick it up ;) and other dacs don't
