If you're lucky, you can get used Mest OG around $600-700

Consider the 3DT. Similar and great imaging and soundstage, impactful bass though some find upper mids and treble too forward - I do not. Fitment can be tricky as they are chunky.
Head-fi review Here, maybe a bit challenging to find new but they show up in the Classifieds not infrequently. They were $350 new, you should be able to find them used nowadays for <$200.

I would be interest to know how the EST addition alters the sound. I have MEXT which do not have ESTs.
One other set I have which has a similar driver configuration to the MEST (IMR Avalon) has better reverb decaying characteristics than the MEXT, giving a
better sense of depth and space with some genres.

Not a big fan of the MEXT. It doesn't have the punch for the subbass like the MEST series did.
In Hong Kong we also have UM Max, which is an "upgraded" version of MEXT, with 1 electrostatic driver on top and "improved" DD and OBCs. And yes, it is tuned just like the MEXT, still no punch for the subbass.
The OBCs just doesn't fit my library I guess. I listen to band sounds the most and I need that speed and punch in the music!

I would expect to use the expression 'punch' for bass as referring of the impact of the mid-bass which the MEXT has tons of it.
But I understand you mean that there is more sub-bass extension with the MEST 2

Clean deep punch is on 50-60hz rather than bleeding punch on 80-100hz. Mests have them right

Still reasonably well. I prefer the Mk2 tuning ; the MK3 is just a tad forward and bright and more fatiguing. I would consider it a side-step not an upgrade or downgrade.

As for comparisons, if you get a good fit (or if you touch both your fingers to the shells to accentuate the BCD the soundstage expands and the it becomes more musical). They‘re a safe second hand purchase. I would say it holds up quite well. Some of the 64Audio IEM’s have held up longer. I might not consider Mest to be ’S’ tier but it’s probably a somewhere in the ’A’. I’d be interested in your opinion how they hold up against the Helios and Monarch actually.
