Ultrasone edition 10 "THE BUTTERFLY" initial impressions

While a lot of Head-Fi'ers like to collect phones, I've been kind of veering in the opposite direction, as in less is better. As of now, I have both an Ed 10 and Ed 8 LE, but have been thinking lately about putting the Ed 8 for sale, since 95% of my listening sessions are on the Ed 10.

While the Ed 8 is an amazing closed-back, the un-headphone like presentation and sparkling sound of the 10 with classical SACDs is simply irresistible, and the only reason I grab the Ed 8 once in a blue moon is likely out of a little guilt. The issue then is whether to keep great phones as a back up or alternative pair even though they're rarely used.

To sell or not to sell, that's the question, as far as the Ed 8 LE is concerned. But in my book, the 10 is a sure keeper.

I listened to the LCD2 and the ED10 again yesterday after a month without touching them. I had to literally wipe off the dust on the LCD2 and the ED10 (seems like the LCD2 is more prone to dust). After giving both of them a hard listen again, I am selling the ED10. I really appreciate the "magic" the ED10 brought to me in some kinds of music which it excels even better than the LCD2. But now, with the SR009, I don't think the ED10 is necessary.

My rationale was to use the ED10 as a compliment to the LCD2 as some music sounds better on the ED10 than on the LCD2. That opinion has not changed. Now I am using the LCD2 as a compliment to the SR009, and a third pair is not necessary IMO.

I will, however, remember dearly that it is the ED10 which brought me to the world of two channel music [...]

I could never live with just an open headphone, unfortunately. Much of my headphone listening has to be done with a sealed headphone. So while I like to keep a variety of headphones anyway, the Ed 8 will be with me for a very long time. I envy those that can use exclusively open cans, although between the Ed 8 and the R10, I don't exactly suffer when closed cans are needed :D

Dude, if you are selling your ED8, can you let me know by private message first? Many thanks.

My Ed 8 LE has seen a bit more action recently because its isolation is very effective against air-conditioning noise in the summer. But like I said, I end going for the Ed 10 whenever I get a chance, seduced by its un-headphone like presentation with classical SACDs. And that's the thing, 'cause although I like to have an alternative pair at hand, it has to be as appealing to me as the Ed 10. And while the Ed 8 is possibly the best closed-back pair of cans out there today by a wide margin, portable or not, the Ed 10 betters it in sheer musical pleasure, at least IMHO. Anyway, I'll PM you if or when I decide to sell the 8LE.

I listened to the Edition 10 and I liked it.

Along with A2000X, W5000, W1000X, Edition 8, LCD-2, HD800, Tesla T5p, the Edition 10 competes well against them, but after hearing all of these I think I like the sound of the T5p the most, and the looks of the Edition 8, something like that, however I own the A2000X myself.

I own both ED10 and T5p. I am surprised at how some people in the LCD2 thread are trying to be-little these headphones. I own the LCD2 too, and I admit that the LCD2 may be good bang for the buck, less colored, and a better all rounder, but it still can't achieve some of the feats which the ED10 and T5p did.

The ed 10 may sound great but they are really ugly. Give me a black edition, please.

I think you've got it backwards...they look great (and are very comfy), but sound pretty bad (according to many ears I trust).

I am giving them a try for a third time. As MacedonianHero says I love their look but the sound........
This third time I am auditioning a pair recabled with the Zeus cables. I listened to them as soon as I received them and even that they sounded better than the second pair I owned (after the earpad fix) they still have the same sound characteristic with the hump in the upper midrange and sounding a little bit metallic. I decided to give them the same burn-in as my Edition 9 (400 hours). Right now they have 264 hours of burn-in. They have changed some, settle a little bit and sound less metallic but I still much prefer my T1 or HD800 or HE-6.
Let's see what happens when they reach the 400 hours.

Any update?

Well, No updates yet because I have been at RMAF this weekend. The 400 hours won't be until a week from tomorrow. I am not holding by breath with them. I think they will sound better than stock but I don't think at the level of others I have. There was only one pair at RMAF/Canjam. I asked the dealer what he thinks about out them and he was very honest and basically said he brought them to Canjam just to see somebody gives him an offer to get rid off them. In his opinion Ultrasone really made  a mistake with this design. Will see in a week......
