It's not always as simple as brand association, though.  I love the Edition 8, still have them, still love them.  Gave the Edition 10 two chances, just like Musicman, didn't like them either time.  I felt there were lots of headphones I had hears that sounded better overall for under $500.  I adored both the way the Edition 10 looked, and felt on the head.  I wanted so very badly to like them.  Just I just never could.
 
Funny, I expected to like the Edition 10, and didn't, and expected not to like the ATH-W3000ANV, and loved them.  Ya just never know.

I would definitely agree that there's more to it than brand association, Skylab. You've actually listened critically to the Edition 10 however. You've spent quite a lot of time evaluating it first-hand, and your opinions are backed by actual experience. I remember the early days of this thread and others, when you and I (and a few others) were arguing for giving these a fair chance and not judging them until they could be auditioned.
 
The issue with brand association is mainly among people who haven't heard the Edition 10, don't intent to, and seem to have already formed a conclusion. I look back and just can't help but feel as though some head-fiers wanted the Edition 10 to be a colossal failure. The whole "Ultrasone can't make good headphones" sentiment is almost a meme now, and some people who haven't even heard a single Ultrasone headphone perpetuate it.
 
I think there's a genuine kernel of truth to the disappointment in the Edition 10. I also think it was a bit exaggerated as a whole however, and a lot of it has to do with that mentality I described. I think the Edition 10 is a failure, but not as much of a failure as it's made out to be. Now that things have quieted a bit, I think we may see a few slightly less negative impressions pop up here and there.

I'm fully in agreement with your view that while the Ed 10 is admittedly overpriced, it's been a victim of a relentless negative campaign. Actually, having lived with the Ed 10 for over a year now, my personal opinion is that it's a top performer, albeit a very revealing one. And as we know so well, revealing transducers have a tendency to open a can of other audio worms. I'll be looking forward to your impressions...

Jamanto8 how lucky you are to live out there, sounds wonderful.  I would trade all of my headphones/gear to live in a place like that and be able to even subsist.  Missing meets or inability to audition before buying is a small price to pay.

After 4 years enjoying the Ed9, I finally own the Ed10.

The pair I just bought are s/n 0548. I do not believe these have had much use as the pads are in perfect condition and the cable is still wrapped and wired up like new.

I have to say that after listening to these headphones on the first day I understand what Tyll was expressing in his video. Of course he was over reacting but I fully understand his sentiment.

I was happy to give these phones a decent burn in before writing them off as a bad purchase.

After 12 hours of burning in I found that the treble had calmed down from its over sibilance to something that started to let lower registers have more space and attention. I have never experienced a headphone change so much from a short burn in.

So far they have had 30 hours of use and are nowhere near good. The potential is there but it only gets to shine with certain music. Piano concerto sounds better than I have ever heard on phones before. Cymbals still sound like they are exaggerated about 500% too much.

I'll post additional comments overt the coming weeks to let you know how the journey with these goes.

All those with experience of the burn in length for this model, do remind me of how long it took to find happiness or the end of your patience. Ed 9 took a good 500 hours so I'm in this for the long haul.

I bought the ED10 twice. The first pair was for the first batch in in the USA (bad ear pads) and it was horrible even after 400 hours of burn-in. The second pair were form the "fixed" ones and it was also recabled with a Zeuz OCC Copper cable. It was better then the first one but no teven close to the sound of the ED9 even after the 400 hours burn-in. They were sold too. I hope they work for you.

I was very disappointed because I really like the looks and they were very comfortable but I could not get used to their sound.

Thanks for your experience guys.  I do not question it one bit.  I know many respectable members have had a hard time with them.
 
I'm only up to 50 hours so far and things are improving.  It started performing well with Piano music, and now is doing well with male vocal.
 
I can only say that with female voices, even The Carpenters are causing sibilance and I have always found Karen's voice very smooth and controlled on all headphones.
 
Although they are far from great, I have confidence in the direction  they are going, but I would be unhappy if I paid full price, that's for sure.
 
Build quality and looks.  You know how great they are in that field, but that is not enough for a headphone.
 
I'll post updates at important stages.

I will all depend in your taste of sound and music type. IMO they sounded really good with acoustic music. My personal issue with them was in the upper midrange and highs. For instance a snare drum to me sounded to metallic and unrealistic and could not passed that.
I hope they work for you. They are my favorite looks wise.

 Not necessarily "fake reviews" as you put it,  more along the lines of over enthusiasm or "new toy syndrome" as some refer to it. 
 
 When you purchase a new top tier mega buck piece of equipment its hard not to gush about it until reality sets in weeks or months later.
