Toranku's Thoughts and Reviews (and target EQ filters!)

Yeah it's fascinating... We're all telling ourselves that we'll be super productive, now that we have all the time in the world for our hobbies. But it seems we need the daily grind and struggle to get us going in the first place! I also have dozens of articles and reviews waiting for my motivation to return. The current situation is exhausting us all mentally. Chill out, recharge your batteries and enjoy music!

Thank you! Do you run an audio review website? Please plug some of your content here

I don't have both, but I have heard both extensively. N3 has better top end extension and on a technical level it's slightly better. But I'd say N3 is still a warm and bassy earphone like E5K is. May sound like sacrilege, but EQ the E5K a bit to see if it helps (its free!!!). Reduce the entire 20-500hz region, especially around 250hz.

It's hard to recommend stuff to people knowing that some only can have access by blind buying and end up paying "tuition fees". Try something like a Sony IER-M9 if you can. My favourite warm iem.

S8Z is gonna have a truck load more treble if you're coming from the 846. Perhaps you can find a used M7 for cheap and then sell it for little to no loss if you don't like it. Used M9 can be found for much cheaper than NA retail as well as @papa_mia mentioned.
Im fine with using EQ but I have no idea what settings (Q, peak EQ and stuff like that, using Neutron player). And the bass quantity isnt my problem, it is that the bass is too boomy and I would it to be tighter, faster and with better texture.

The M9 is way too expensive and is only using BA drivers, I need a DD for the bass. Cant test anything either as the music shop doesnt have any iems I can try (only some headphones...) so all my purchases have been blind purchases.

Sounds like you find it bloated which I can relate. You can get tighter and better textured bass if you choose to reduce the 200-300hz range. Try a 0.7 Q @ 200 or 250hz and slowly reduce the dB until you're satisfied as an experiment.

Well that helped. I take it that the Sony XBA-N3 wouldnt be much of an upgrade or at all over the E5000 if I am looking for a tighter, cleaner bass while still being warm?

Yeah IMO the upgrade is only slight

Well, I’m convinced. Instead of getting either the S8Z vs Moondrop S8 vs...on and on, I’ll just save up and get the M9 as my “end game” IEM, that is for now at least. I always thought the Z1R was my end game, but now I think the M9 is more versatile, and different from what I currently own.

I have my eye on M9 too, looks like a terrific IEM, and for $800 new i find it hard to beat...but still, lotta money :frowning2:

Presenting: Toranku Target v5!

TorkTargetv5.png

Now with a bass shelf starting from 150hz and 8dB gain at 3khz. Decreased treble by 2dB at 10khz. Master post (with public access data) can be found here.

Spent a lot of time these few weeks at home to come up with this revision. Lots and lots of testing and splitting hairs over minor changes. Please try it out! Less warmth and more 3khz compared to the previous target since some friends were commenting that the 3khz was a tad muffled.

Miiiight also come up with a database of EQ settings for earphones to achieve this target. I'll see if I have the time/determination.

Cheers and stay healthy. :)

yes please - this will only add to your credibility as users who are familiar with building compensation curves can actually hear your preferences.

I'll need my own mic to measure the earphones I have access to, though. Currently I am relying on a buddy with a 711 but I don't want to inconvenience him if I am starting on a project like this.

I'm an android user too so its difficult to collect measurements on the go. Will have to bring an interface around. Oh well. Still I am keen on doing it though :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
