Toranku's Thoughts and Reviews (and target EQ filters!)

Presenting: Toranku Target v5!

Now with a bass shelf starting from 150hz and 8dB gain at 3khz. Decreased treble by 2dB at 10khz. Master post (with public access data) can be found here.

Spent a lot of time these few weeks at home to come up with this revision. Lots and lots of testing and splitting hairs over minor changes. Please try it out! Less warmth and more 3khz compared to the previous target since some friends were commenting that the 3khz was a tad muffled.

Miiiight also come up with a database of EQ settings for earphones to achieve this target. I'll see if I have the time/determination.

Cheers and stay healthy. :)

nice work bro, pretty much the shape i prefer too (more subbass than midbass, 3k peak, more highs maybe)

"Miiiight also come up with a database of EQ settings for earphones to achieve this target. I'll see if I have the time/determination."

maybe a couple IEM/DAP combo EQ settings would be cool, like 5? too many IEMs/DAPs comboes to make settings for each, but would like to hear wat u hear, maybe some common combos :)

DAPs are a little difficult to work around honestly. They are usually tied down to graphic EQ with a fixed Q factor. However Android DAPs with UAPP do have parametric EQ which I will have much easier time coming up EQ parameters for.

Currently a large part of my work process is to use Room EQ Wizard's auto EQ algorithm which sometimes can lead to pretty ridiculous values like 20dB gain or Q factors of 7+ on certain bands. I've to play around with the max gain settings and also fix the bass region manually to hit my curve.

That said though, I do have EQ profiles on some IEMs like Moondrops that I can release. Also another uncertainty I have are the treble region of IEMs. I don't want to mess with the coupler resonance of the 711 system or the 8-10khz region too much as well. I only have confidence matching 20hz-7000hz since the 711 measuring system is highly accurate in those regions. How the earphone is measured also affects the results of the measurements here - a deeper fit on the coupler leads to darker measurements. How much treble do I add/subtract is hard to decide since individual's canal resonance frequency can vary a lot.

Hi toranku,

Between the 1695 and moondrop s8 which has better detail, imaging and technical ability? Are they better than the m7 in that regard?

I personally perceive the S8 as having better detail and imaging than 1695 and M7. 1695 has seen quite conflicting user reports in my experience - some say the treble peaks are ridiculously fatiguing while some, like me, are fine with it. I do somewhat enjoy the bass and mids of the 1695 otherwise.

M7 I'd put them the last in detail but on a tonality front it beats out the S8 and 1695 completely for me.

thx for the super detailed response :) i herd that >10kHz measurements r unreliable from somewhere too, makes sense. pls by all means do it your preferred way, i will be interested in the outcome if u decide to proceed i like experimenting too

will have to try that parametric EQ too, looks like more precise vs. graphic eq, to tune signature

I'll try to set up the database of the EQ project soon. Will utilise as many universal fit earphone measurements I can from my good friend. I cannot guarantee "easy" EQ settings with Q factors that are under 2 or dB gain under 10dB . Users may have to use programmes like Equiliser APO to fit my EQ parameters since they allow for up to 30dB gain and high Q factor.

Not my thing but I do believe it has potential if they ever decide to reduce the midbass/lowmid hump. Yes, going for a higher impedance source flattens that bump but most well designed amplifiers have < 1ohm OI and I don't want to be bogged down by a voltage divider like an ifimatch. Also the tweeter should be further damped/reworked as it can have some resonances that don't play well with cymbal reproduction leading to cymbals that have a "clinking" sound rather than crashing properly.

Otherwise with low OI sources it just sounds hazy and dare I say, low resolution due to the lowmid hump and lack of 3khz.

Hi toranku,

What your opinion regarding Moondrop S8 against Fearless S8Z? I'll definetily try them out before buying after quarantine ended. Just want your opinion. Thanks.

Oh, that's good to know. After trying the m9 for a number of times i think the sig is just a bit too boring for me. But the imaging was one of the best I've heard so I've been trying and buying numerous iem's lately, while they were better in other areas they just didn't have the imaging capabilities of the m9. i thought the m7 was similar but just missing the details in the highs, so good to know that the s8 is better than m7 in imaging and details.

S8 is slightly better imo. Very different signatures but the S8 is greater on a technical front. Tonality wise I prefer S8Z.

But of course since you're able to try them out (hopefully soon), I'd like to hear your take.

Different than what I would’ve thought. I would’ve thought that the Fearless would be better technically, but the Moondrop better with tuning. I wish I could listen to them.

Have you heard the Blessing 2? How do you think it compares to the Moondrop S8? I’m thinking I may like it more with the DD, but wonder how it is technically with the mids and treble vs the S8.

Lastly, have you heard the ThieAudio Legacy 3 yet? I’m really liking it, but would love to know what you think of it.

Haven't heard both the B2 and L3

I just tried the s8 and blessing 2 and purchased the b2 in the end as i find the technicalities is quite close. Maybe the s8 has slightly better imaging and has slightly wider staging. Details are about the same i think. But the b2 does bass better which is expected because of the dynamic driver. And vocals are more forward on the b2 while s8 is more neutral. But the b2 can be quite uncomfortable to wear because of the larger housing and nozzle so i actually might sell it even though i enjoyed the sound....

But so far the best hybrid I've tried so far is the qdc fusion. Still waiting for it to arrive should be here soon as its already been a month already.

@toranku have you heard the qdc v6 by any chance? I have the v3 but lately have been wanting aomwthing thats detailed with good technicalities. I seem to like the qdc sound and it seems very consistent as ive liked most ive heard so far.

I'm quite stoked to try the B2. Initially was going to try them when they reached singapore but corona hit hard and I wasn't able to. Moondrop is one of the most consistent brands out there.

From what I remember, I described the V6 as brittle sounding. It's odd since on FR it appears similar to Gemini and 8SL. I have to refresh myself on the rest of the qdc lineup outside of their 8 and 10 BAs.
