what?
Here are some updates/my notes on tips + um2..
why?
These notes are mainly for my re-collection
Maybe it could help someone compare and contrast their experiences with
using different UM2 tips.
history:
I've had my um2 for a few months already.
Sometime in my tests I did change to a tomahawk,
so it could've influenced my listening notes.
some subjective notes:
* Seal is
paramount (regardless of how good the recommended tips are)!
* Supplied short/long complies were not thick enough for a good seal
* Tried all tips in the Shure fit kit,
the ones I liked I had on for a few weeks before switching
- all had good seal except the clear flex ones, all sizes
they were too hard for my inner ears, no seal whatsoever
- best comfort/fit were the yellow foams
but in my ears the sound was a little muffled,
as if attenuated by the soft foam, bass was more but less reverberant with some bloom
- next up was the mid grey flex, best fit with a "pop"
less muffled/more clarity across the range including bass, tighter and reverberant
I had this on the longest.
Voices seemed a little recessed in the whole music presentation.
Good headstage, perceived ~2-3" to the sides and front and ~1" to the rear.
But this could be due to the tomahawk > 400 hours
- currently using a Shure tri-flange modded to bi-flange
It's still new to me since I received this yesterday.
First-off I was concerned it would not fit well expecting it to be
as hard as the clear flex. It is also the longest tip of the lot.
But I did like the UE biflange the best of the supplied UE tips.
- Immediate observations, best clarity across the range so far.
Bass tightened a lot more, less reverberant, little or no bloom.
Voices are now a little more forward or in line with the music presentation.
I think I loss a little bit of depth in my headstage, need to listen some more.
However it's a little bit wider since the sound is tipped more towards the highs.
With this I do get a little more sibilance, or the current setup just shows the
poor recording.
Need to spend several more weeks on this tip.
what next?
* UM56 / W3 / customs?
I'm not sure if that is money well spent considering that my setup above
is purely for portable/work/outdoor use.
* Money that could be spent on a dedicated home amp/headphone setup
* For now the bi-flange should/will do me fine.
cheers all
